Facebook & Non-traditional students

Posted by Sarah Roche on October 17, 2011

Are you aware of how many Binghamton University departments use social media to alert students of events and happenings? On this page you can find a comprehensive list detailing by department and preferred application. I liked a few of these pages on Facebook, specifically the Continuing Education & Outreach page and the Binghamton University Page. The Binghamton University page offers a great daily photo and sometimes posts contests and the CEO page recently ran a great tip about Branch Out, a Facebook app that lets you network efficiently. After perusing the list, I added the Harpur School of Arts & Sciences page to my Facebook network as well.

Personally, I have a Facebook profile but I use it primarily communicating with long distance friends and keeping up with specific business or university pages. When it comes to business, I find social media to be a great tool and have used Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn in order to advertise events or recruit employees.  Of course, I currently blog for Binghamton University’s Department of Continuing Education & Outreach. I also review local performances for the Broome Arts Mirror.

It seems clear that social media is here to stay, although with the addition of Google+ to the mix finding out each person’s preferred network as difficult as trying to maintain a functional identity on each of the various sites.

How do you use social media as a non-traditional student? Have you liked any Binghamton University Facebook Pages? Which pages do you like or recommend? Let me know in the comments below.

We also have a student group for graduate students with children. join our facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/BUParentsCollective/

The Binghamton University Parent’s Collective (BUPC) is a graduate student organization that works to form a mutually-supportive community of parents. We seek to make the campus more family-friendly and offer parents the opportunity to take advantage of low-cost, community and educational activities.

Amanda,

This sounds like a great group that I would love to hear more about!

So what is your take on the use of social media by businesses as means of establishing a presence? It is becoming more apparent that companies social media profiles are being empowered by the growth of said social media channels and subsequently these channels are becoming increasingly more important. So much so that prospective students are using their would be employer’s facebook, twitter or linkedin pages as first stops on their quest for employment. As matter of fact, some employers are embracing this idea and an example would be this site here: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/
Heck, have gone so far as to advertise job positions on their pages in an attempt to supplement their other hiring practices. What is your take on this Phenomenon and are students being made aware of such paradigm shifts?
