The Center for the Teaching of American History sponsors week-long summer workshops for teachers and librarians in Broome, Seneca, Tompkins and Tioga counties. Topics are developed in accordance with New York State curriculum standards in U.S. History. Workshops take place on the Binghamton University campus. They are led by Binghamton University faculty, experienced social studies teachers, and as of 2007, BOCES literacy specialists. We have held workshops in the summers of 2002-2007. As we begin our third grant we are developing a new series of thematic workshops to be offered over the next three years. Not only will we develop workshops with a view to fresh content, we are also adding a new methodological component. Focusing on literacy skills in the social studies classroom, we are partnering with BOCES to help teachers in our workshops further develop their instruction with up-to-date literacy teaching techniques.
Content Focused Resources:
After the completion of the workshop, each
participant prepares an individual teaching unit to be tested during the
following academic year and presented to a formal Peer Review
conference the following spring. The strongest individual projects
will be published on this wesbsite for use by other teachers and
librarians.
