Application/Nomination Guidelines and Definitions
Prior to applying or nominating someone for an award, readers should review this list of guidelines that apply to both individual and organizational awards. Self-nominations are encouraged. Any questions or concerns which arise regarding these guidelines or the application process should be directed to the Dean of Students Office in UUW-204 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
***Applications are due by 11:45 p.m. Friday April 11.
***Award winners will be invited to an intimate reception with President Harvey Stenger and Dean April Thompson, which will include a dinner, where they will receive their plaque.
Individual Leadership Award Guidelines
- Individual applicants must have a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75 and be in good standing with the University at the time of application and at the time of the awards ceremony. Good standing shall be defined as not being on any disciplinary sanction with the Office of Student Conduct.
- Individual applicants must be matriculated undergraduate or graduate students at the time of application and at the time of the award.
- Supporting documents such as resumes, photos and other documentation is encouraged, but not required, to be attached to your application.
Programming Award Guidelines
"Student organization(s)" may have multiple definitions. Examples are listed below. Should you have any questions as to whether your group is a "student organization" and eligible for a programming award please email Morgan Appel at email@example.com.
- Student Association chartered organization. These groups must be recognized, and must have been chartered both at the time their program occurred and at the time of application.
- Binghamton University recognized Greek Life organizations.
- Club sport teams may apply where applicable. Intramural teams are ineligible for awards.
- Residence Life student staff groups shall refer to no fewer than 3 student staff members from the same residence hall or residential area that co-sponsored a program or activity together.
- Residential community and hall government groups
- Binghamton University Athletics recognized organization.
- Binghamton University recognized honor societies
- All organizations must be in good standing. Good standing includes but is not limited to being recognized by the University and being free of any college-wide disciplinary probation. Good college standing shall be defined as without residential probation, removal from housing, student life probation, suspension or dismissal.
- Supporting documents such as photos or fliers from the program or letters of support from outside agencies are encouraged, but not required, to be attached to your application.
Description of Awards
Emerging Leader of the Year
The Emerging Leader of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has established themselves as a rising leader through significant contributions to their organization, team or staff group. The nominee may be a first-year student, sophomore, junior or senior, however, he/she may not be the president of his/her organization. If you are nominating yourself for this award, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, professional staff member or current member of the student organization you belong to is required. These letters may be dropped off in a sealed and signed envelope to the Dean of Students Office at UUW-204.
Student Organization President of the Year
The Student Organization President of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding individual who publicly advanced the mission of their organization while internally challenging and encouraging the membership to advance new initiatives, acquire new skills, and prepare the group for leadership transition and ongoing success. The nominee must be serving at least in his/her second consecutive semester as president.
Paul J. Battaglia Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Memorial Award
The Paul J. Battaglia Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Memorial Award is presented annually to a student who demonstrates the exceptional leadership traits needed to transform student life at Binghamton University. Students under consideration for the highest award given by the Division of Student Affairs should possess the ability to motivate others, exhibit well-developed communication skills, have a strong academic performance, display leadership in student organizations and service to others, and demonstrate a commitment to improving the college community. If you are nominating yourself for this award, this requires TWO letters of recommendation from a current Faculty or Staff Member.
If you are a Faculty or Staff member nominating this student, please note that you
must ask an additional Faculty or Staff member to deliver a letter of recommendation.
These letters must be in signed and sealed envelopes and delivered to the Dean of
Students Office in UUW204, or they may be directly emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
by the faculty or staff member.
Excellence in Service
The Excellence in Service Award recognizes the most outstanding contributions made by a student organization(s) for developing and implementing a community-service activity, civic-engagement project or philanthropic endeavor that met or advanced the needs of the University or local community. A community-service activity or civic-engagement project is defined as supporting a cause through a deed or physical service. A philanthropic activity is defined as one that supports a cause through the collection or raising of goods, monies or awareness. Service activities, civic-engagement projects or philanthropic endeavors may not be primarily designed to raise awareness of the student organization or raise monies or collect goods for the student organization. Programs which are being nominated for this award must have occurred between April 2012 and April 2013.
Excellence in Collaborative Programming
The Excellence in Collaborative Programming Award honors the student organizations who have taken an active role in co-sponsoring the most outstanding and most creative, educational, social, recreational or service based program for the Binghamton University Community. These organizations have demonstrated the ability to support other student organizations, as well as accept support from others. These organizations take pride in collaborating with other students, staff, faculty and organizations to deliver the best results. If you refer to a specific program these organizations have worked on for this nomination, the program must have occurred between April 2013 and April 2014.
Excellence in Cultural Initiatives
The Excellence in Cultural Initiatives Award recognizes the student organization that takes an active role in supporting the University's commitment to the appreciation and enhancement of diversity. This award is designed to recognize an organization whose programs emphasize inclusivity and multicultural values. If a specific program is being referred to in this nomination, it must have occurred between April 2013 and April 2014.
Community/Hall Government Event of the Year
The Community/Hall Government Event of the Year Award recognizes the community or hall government that planned and implemented the most outstanding program or community service project. This could be a new program, or a longstanding tradition that has continued to improve over time. This event had evidence of creativity and reached a diverse audience. This event continued to raise the College's visibility to the greater community and united members of the College in the spirit of community. Programs which are being nominated for this award must have occurred between April 2013 and April 2014
Outstanding New Program of the Year
The Outstanding New Program of the Year Award recognizes the student organization that planned and implemented the most outstanding new program or community service project. The program should not have been previously hosted by the group, or a similar program hosted by another group within the last five years, and must be of lasting quality that continues to raise the college's visibility to the greater community and unites members of the college in the spirit of community. Programs which are being nominated for this award must have occurred between April 2013 and April 2014.
Outstanding Program of the Year
The Outstanding Program of the Year Award recognizes the student organization that planned and implemented the most outstanding program or community service project. The program should be of a lasting quality that continues to raise the College's visibility to the greater community and unites members of the college in the spirit of community. Programs which are being nominated for this award must have occurred between April 2013 and April 2014.
Outstanding Organization of the Year
The Outstanding Organization of the Year Award seeks to recognize one organization each year that has demonstrated true excellence among its peers within the University community. Application materials must demonstrate the organization's contribution to the overall Binghamton University community, contribution to the development of its members, and demonstrated commitment to the organization's purpose and those served by it. This organization should be able to demonstrate significant development in areas that may include innovative and creative programming, as well as outreach within the Binghamton University community and the local community. This organization must have existed between August 2012 and April 2014.
