All Prospective Graduate Nursing Students

PhD Program Admission Requirements

For students who intend to pursue the PhD program, the following are required and will be evaluated for admission:

  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Graduate Record Examination scores (75th percentile or higher are desirable)
  • Two papers that demonstrate student's ability to analyze and/or synthesize nursing phenomena.
  • Three recommendations for doctoral study
  • A statement of research interests and professional goals including possible current Decker School of Nursing PhD faculty member(s) whose current research you feel your background and interest could coincide with.
  • A current unencumbered license to practice as a registered professional nurse
  • Completion of a statistics course (within five years)
  • Curriculum vita including employment and education history
  • Computer literacy skills
  • A personal interview
  • A progressive record of continued development in nursing practice and scholarship
  • For international students: Official TOEFL or IELTS scores; International Student Financial Statement Form; and Official Bank Statement/Proof of Support
  • All applicants are required to have taken and passed the NCLEX examination prior to the start of clinical courses.

DNP Program Admission Requirements

For students who intend to pursue the DNP program, the following are required and will be evaluated for admission:

DNP POST BACCALAUREATE DEGREE
  • A bachelors degree in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • GRE or MAT
  • A current unencumbered license to practice as a registered professional nurse
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Successful completion of a descriptive statistics course
  • Computer literacy skills
  • Submission of a 500-100 word essay on how the DNP will enhance your career
  • One-year of full-time RN employment is recommended
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Evidence of professional productivity, scholarship, involvement in research, etc.
  • Interview with Program Director or Member of the DNP Admissions Committee
  • For international students: Official TOEFL or IELTS scores; International Student Financial Statement Form; and Official Bank Statement/Proof of Support
DNP POST MASTER'S DEGREE
  • Masters degree in nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program
  • A Bachelors Degree in Nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program
  • Graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • GRE or MATA
  • A current unencumbered license to practice as a registered professional nurse
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation.
  • Current national certification as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist
  • Graduate level statistics course within past five years
  • Computer literacy skills
  • Submission of a 500-1000 word essay on how the DNP will enhance your career
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • For international students: Official TOEFL or IELTS scores; International Student Financial Statement Form; and Official Bank Statement/Proof of Support

Master's Degree Program Admission's Requirements

Although each applicant is considered on an individual basis, the general admissions requirements are:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited school of nursing.
  • A descriptive statistics course
  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • A current unencumbered license to practice as a registered professional nurse
  • Two satisfactory academic or professional references
  • Personal statement
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Computer literacy skills
  • One year of full-time employment is strongly encouraged prior to beginning a program of study.
  • Candidates who begin a program of study without one year of previous full-time employment may wish to consider enrolling in a part-time program option that would allow the candidate to acquire needed working experience.
  • Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination may be required
  • All applicants are required to have taken and passed the NCLEX examination prior to the start of clinical courses.
