The BA
in English with a specialization in creative writing at Binghamton University
is designed to foster in its students a powerful, disciplined and skilled
creativity
cultivated in a supportive environment. Through its dedicated faculty,
students are introduced to all facets of their art its traditions and
masters,
its pleasures and responsibilities, its materials and practices.
|
The areas of study include poetry, fiction, non-fiction,memoir and childrens literature. |
|
The program relies
on writing workshops and the study of literature
to encourage the development of the students as writers. |
The
program cultivates an active community of writers.
A Readers Series
brings writers to campus to expose students to a wide range of literary voices.
Visiting writers supplement the program offerings by teaching classes. Past
visiting writers have included Ai, Marvin Bell, Hayden Carruth, Robert Creeley,
Mark Doty, Stephen Dobyns,
Marilyn Hacker, Marie Howe, Galway Kinnell, Li Young Lee, Carole Maso, Heather
McHugh,
Molly Peacock, Robert Pinsky, Gerald Stern, Henry Taylor,
Tobias Wolff and Charles Wyatt.
The presence of a strong graduate-level program is a distinct advantage to
the undergraduate writers. Throughout the year, graduate students sponsor
their own student
readers series, and run
the Writing by Degrees Creative Writing
Conference, which attracts participants from
across the nation. Harpur Palate (HP),
a grad and undergrad student-edited literary journal,
is produced on campus and attracts submissions from both well-established
and emerging voices.
Undergraduates have also been active in creating forums for themselves.

In recent years there has also been a weekly half-hour poetry show on WHRW, the campus radio station. With the graduation of its host, "The Circle" is no longer on the air but could be revived by an interested student.
In combination with course offerings, these
activities all lead
to a vibrant and challenging atmosphere.
