Even after their deaths in 2012, Dr. Orville F. Nielsen and his wife, Emily A. Nielsen,
continue to help Binghamton University students fulfill their dreams. Their estate
gift of $1 million will be used to foster academic and student excellence. Previous
gifts fund scholarships in nursing, music and theatre.
"The scholarship provides encouragement and reinforcement. It makes me feel that I've
really improved and that I'm on my way." — Joseph Keller '15, double major in music
and mathematics, and recipient of the Emily A. Nielsen and Orville F. Nielsen, MD
Music Scholarship in Honor of Associate Professor Mary Burgess.
"The theatre program definitely changed my life for the better. I was introduced to
this creativity I didn't know I had. The scholarship is a great help financially.
Being recognized for your work is also a boost." — Emely Zepeda '13, theatre major
and recipient of the Emily A. Nielsen and Orville F. Nielsen, MD Scholarship in Music
