What is ABD?

ABD (All But Dissertation)

ABD stands for “all but dissertation." This means a currently enrolled student has satisfactorily completed all requirements for the doctorate except for the dissertation, including:

  • All program course requirements specified in the Bulletin for the student’s year of admission;
  • All research skills requirements;
  • Comprehensive examination;
  • Departmental requirements regarding prospectus or plans for dissertation.

Certification is required by the Graduate Director, who completes and submits the Admission to Candidacy for Doctoral Degree form to The Graduate School at Binghamton University:
