Educational Leadership Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS)

The Educational Leadership program at Binghamton University offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) which prepares prospective educational leaders to serve in PreK-12 schools and school districts. The program is designed for part-time, post-master's students who work full time as teachers or other kinds of educational professionals in elementary and secondary schools.

Graduates holding a CAS may pursue future employment as staff developers, curriculum coordinators, program directors, assistant principals and principals, assistant superintendents and superintendents, or other PreK-12 educational leaders and administrators.

Successful completion of the CAS and other requirements will permit Binghamton University to recommend qualified students to the State Education Department for either (or both) of the following NYS administrative certifications:

  • School Building Leader (SBL-Initial) and/or
  • School District Leader (SDL-Professional)

Application Deadline

The certificate application deadline is rolling.

Admission Requirements*

Applicants must submit the Graduate School's required admission materials:

  • Online graduate degree application and application fee
  • Official transcript(s) from each college/university at which you earned a degree (Current Binghamton University graduate students or individuals also applying to a master's or doctoral program at Binghamton University do not need to submit transcripts with their certificate application.)

Important note: Funding is not available to non-degree students completing certificate programs. Certificate students are not automatically admitted to master's or doctoral programs. They must meet the admissions requirements of those degree programs and be accepted. Students may concurrently apply for a certificate and a Binghamton University graduate degree program. However, a student cannot be awarded a certificate twice, nor can a student apply work for one certificate to a different certificate. Learn more about graduate certificate programs.

Please see department website for additional information and admission requirements.
