Chemistry Adolescence Education
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
This adolescence education program is for students who have an undergraduate degree in chemistry and seek certification to teach chemistry in grades 7-12. Students who complete the degree are eligible for initial certification (see Teacher Certification for more information).
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in chemistry. The applicant's undergraduate work must be acceptable to the Chemistry Department in Harpur College, as well as to the Graduate School of Education. Students without appropriate undergraduate preparation in chemistry are required to take additional credit-hours in consultation with the graduate director in Chemistry to be eligible to apply to this program. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better in chemistry and overall.
In addition, applicants should have a distribution of undergraduate coursework in the arts and sciences, which must include one semester of college-level study or three years of high school in a language other than English. It is recommended that students meet with a graduate adviser prior to applying to the MAT Chemistry program.
Letters of recommendation should be from chemistry professors familiar with the applicant’s work. (In the special case of an applicant having held an extended position in the field of education, one letter may be from the applicant’s supervisor in the position.)
If all prerequisite undergraduate requirements have been met, the MAT degree requires three semesters of full-time study (or the equivalent of part-time study). Students may begin their degree programs in either the fall or spring semester, but will be admitted for the spring semester only if space permits. Matriculated students are expected to successfully complete LTRC 519, SEC 500, SEC 593, and 100 clock hours of fieldwork before being admitted to the fall student teaching semester. Because the Master of Arts in Teaching course of study is a unique graduate program that results in a professional credential, we expect our students to conduct themselves professionally at all times in both university and school classrooms.Minimum Requirements for Degree (courses are subject to change)
This program requires a minimum of 42 credits: 22 credits in education, 12 credits in the academic discipline, and 8 credits in supervised student teaching. Grades of B or better must be earned in both SEC 593 and SEC 594, and an overall average of B or better must be maintained to graduate.
