How is GPA calculated? What points do I earn for each grade in a class?

Answer

Each letter grade is assigned a quality point value (QP) as follows:

A 4 C+ 2.3
A- 3.7 C 2.0
B+ 3.3 C- 1.7
B 3.0 D 1.0
B- 2.7 F 0.0

To calculate your GPA, multiply the number of credits for each course by the equivalent of the letter grade, as indicated above. The total is referred to as 'grade points'. Add together the grade points for all courses being used in the calculation. Divide the total number of grade points by the total number of attempted/completed credits.

Courses with Pass (P), Incomplete (I), Missing Grade (MG) and Audit (AU) notations are not included in your GPA calculation.

If you retake a course, your GPA will be affected as follows:

Repeating a previously failed course-both grades are factored into your GPA.

Repeating a previously passed course-credits are earned only with the first registration and only the first grade is factored into your GPA. For more information on repeating courses, please see the Catalog, and the following FAQ's:

To determine your anticipated GPA, you may use our current semester GPA calculator. Calculations made with our online GPA tools are NOT official. Your official GPA record is found on your transcript.
