Mission Review Document October 1998

Binghamton University Strategic Planning Council 1998-99

November 1998

Message from the President

This copy of Binghamton's mission review summary document was developed in response to questions submitted to us by the Provost of the State University of New York. Binghamton's Strategic Planning Council, under the leadership of Provost Mary Ann Swain, developed our response, and we have submitted it for review to the SUNY Provost's Office.
According to the procedure outlined earlier, the next steps in the Mission Review process will be: (1) the SUNY Provost's Office will prepare a set of ques-tions for dialogue with the campus based on our Summary Document; (2) the campus will name no more than six "interlocutors" (including the president, chief academic officer and a representative of the elected faculty leadership); (3) the SUNY system will designate no more than four interlocutors; (4) these interlocutors will meet on campus; (5) SUNY Provost Peter Salins will prepare a draft Missions Memorandum of Understanding document for our campus; (6) additional meetings will lead to further refinement of the Mission Memo-randum of Understanding; and (7) eventually this Memorandum will be signed by the campus president and SUNY Chancellor Ryan.
The mission review process is critical to Binghamton's planning and vision for the future. It will determine the scope of our academic programs as well as their funding. Thus, the outcome of the mission review process is vitally important to our campus.

Sincerely,

Lois B. DeFleur
President
