Academic and Pre-Professional Organizations
Actuarial Association informs students about the actuarial profession and aids them in preparing for careers as actuaries. Members are notified about permanent and summer internship and job opportunities through extensive on-campus recruiting by major firms. Study groups are formed and support is provided for members taking the actuarial examinations. Come find out about the number-one job in America according to the Jobs Rated Almanac.

American Marketing Association (AMA),
a professional collegiate chapter of the National American Marketing Association, exposes students to a variety of practical business experiences. Members are encouraged to attend various presentations, leadership conferences and internships with local businesses. Additionally, the organization assists members in the job search by sending out member résumé books to various marketing companies. Bi-monthly marketing publications are also available.

American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is a pre-health chapter of National AMSA, a pre-med and medical organization consisting of students and physicians. Annual trips to medical schools, fundraisers, community service projects, volunteerships at local hospitals, medical panels and faculty mixers allow students to gain greater direction and insight into the various pre-health opportunities that are available.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) consists of students who have an interest in mechanical engineering. Plant tours, guest speakers and regional conferences enable members to broaden their knowledge of the engineering field and associate with students and professionals with similar interests. Social events such as the end-of-semester dinner allow socializing with other engineering students and faculty.

Art History Association (AHA) promotes the appreciation and understanding of art on campus, especially for undergraduate students. We want to strengthen ties between faculty and students, as well as work with other groups to reach this goal. We have meetings, go on trips, and support artistic endeavors on campus. The AHA also helped start the Museum Conversation sessions in the University’s Permanent Collection with faculty speakers.

BU Pre-Vet Society educates students about the opportunities available within the field of veterinary medicine. We provide academic guidance, internship/employment information and volunteer activities. In addition, local veterinarians often attend meetings to discuss their experiences and answer questions.

Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization is an organization for minority students who are interested in pursuing business careers. The group offers social and academic support. It also hosts various guest speakers and workshops. Other activities include corporate business trips, business conferences and a mentor-mentee program.

Binghamton Speech and Debate competes in intercollegiate forensics tournaments. The newest part of the team is a two-person CEDA (Cross-Examination Debate Association) debate. Each semester a new topic is provided for CEDA debate. In addition to debate, the team participates in 18 events. These range from dramatic interpretation, to persuasive speaking, to impromptu speaking. Since the team provides coaching for students, no previous experience is necessary. The team is the only student-run program of its kind in the state, and it has been very successful. Individuals from the team have qualified for nationals and have won state championships as well. Any student with interest in public speaking, writing, literature, current events or argumentation can find a role on the Binghamton Speech and Debate team.

Charles R. Drew Minority Pre-Health Organization is named in honor of Charles R. Drew, the eminent African American medical doctor whose pioneering research in blood plasma preservation and transfusion and the Rh factor led to the establishment of blood banks. It is in this spirit of achievement that the organization aims to recruit, retain and support students of historically disadvantaged and under-represented ethnic groups in their pursuit of careers in the science and health fields. Some activities include visits to hospitals and medical schools, seminars with invited speakers from the science and health fields, and academic networking for study groups and tutorials. In this way, members are able to promote academic as well as personal growth for one another as they advance toward their professional goals.

Finance Society is dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of finance-related activities. We educate students on important issues and know-how of the financial market. We provide hands-on experience in the stock market using various Investment Challenge tools. It is a great opportunity to learn more about stocks, bonds and trades performed beyond the classroom. Activities include field trips, guest speakers from major corporations, various fund-raisers and career recruitment information.

Human Development Student Organization (HDSO)
is designed to promote and stimulate interaction between students and faculty of the human development division of SEHD. The HDSO promotes social activities and sponsors various events, lectures and workshops; solicits student input on school committees; and encourages student involvement in SEHD-sponsored programs.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Association for Computing Machinery (IEEE/ACM) High Technology Society
brings together students from various majors who have a common interest in fields pertaining to higher technologies. Activities include tours of local industry, Career Day recruitment, participation in computer programming competitions, guest lectures, various fundraisers and numerous social events.

Know Thyself is a practical philosophy group dedicated to finding peace and meaning in everyday life. Know Thyself discusses philosophical and mystic teachings from around the world and puts them into practice in everyday life. The group firmly believes that the greatest wisdom of all and the source of lasting happiness are not a dream, but a reality that can be reached by everyone.

Mary E. Mahoney (MEM) Nursing Support Group is named in honor of Mary E. Mahoney, the first minority member to have graduated as a professional nurse at the New England Hospital for Women and Children. She was and shall remain an inspiration to many nursing students. The purpose of this group is to provide a forum for under-represented students that will facilitate learning and promote personal and professional growth in the nursing field. The group is involved in community projects such as food and clothing drives and educating the public on various health concerns. MEM provides other services to its members, such as externship and scholarship information, study groups and test reviews. The group invites guest speakers with different backgrounds in nursing to inform and educate members about the many opportunities that are open to them. The group sponsors University-wide activities such as free blood pressure screenings and health informational programs.

Mathematics Club sponsors activities that facilitate communication between faculty and undergraduates, such as Pre-Registration Night and a spring lecture series. The club also provides forums in which members work together (GRE math and Putnam exam preparation, for example).

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), with almost 6,000 members, is one of the largest student-managed organizations in the country. The society is dedicated to the realization of a better tomorrow through the development of intensive programs for increasing the recruitment, retention and successful graduation of minorities in engineering. NSBE is composed of more than 150 chapters located on college and university campuses throughout the United States.

Nursing Student Association promotes the nursing profession at the undergraduate level and creates unity among nursing students through social and educational events. It also sponsors University-wide events to promote health care.

Phi Sigma Iota is the international foreign language honor society that provides the highest academic honor offered anywhere to outstanding students in the field of foreign languages and literatures. The society recognizes and encourages individual efforts by granting annual scholarships and offering programs of high cultural interest to its members and to the entire University community. Everyone is welcome to participate in our weekly "cafés," where we speak foreign languages and enjoy their cultures’ music and films. Also held are study-abroad and career opportunities sessions, foreign language book fairs, dinner dances and musical concerts. For more information call x74801.

Physical and Occupational Therapy Association (POTA) is for students who would like to explore their interest and meet other students with an interest in these fields. Students can learn about these fields through special guest lectures, research of pre-requirements of physical and occupational therapy schools, and organized visits to various schools.

Political Science Association (PSA)
The purpose of the PSA is to act as an official political science student-faculty organization that provides activities of interest to political science students, sponsors guest speakers and seminars, and promotes advisory services for potential and present political science majors.

Psi Chi is the national honor society for psychology and psychobiology majors with at least junior standing, a 3.3 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA in their major. Prospective members are required to do 10 service hours within the organization or the community. Psi Chi encourages excellence in scholarship and in advancing the science of psychology. Members participate in workshops on preparing for graduate school, career opportunities and community service.

Psychobiology Club is for psychobiology, psychology and biology majors and anyone interested in the new and developing field of psychobiology. The club brings awareness to the major, the field and its potential for the future. It provides an opportunity for exploration through information, experience, and faculty and peer guidance. Activities include speakers, fundraisers, informational presentations, résumé workshops, an annual research forum, a test bank, movie trips, picnics.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is an organization for engineering students interested in transportation such as cars and airplanes. Tours to related sites and shows are conducted each year to give members an opportunity to meet with like-minded professionals and students. SAE members have access to an extensive résumé database and receive a monthly automotive or aerospace magazine.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) brings together potential engineers and computer science students, both male and female, with common goals. We encourage our members to broaden the image of engineering as a viable profession for women in society today. We arrange community activities to encourage young minds to get involved in the sciences and engineering.

Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society, founded at Binghamton University in 1992, is a support group for students of color who plan to attend law school. Our main goal is to encourage our members to aggressively pursue a legal profession through support and preparation. We accomplish this goal by hosting workshops, inviting attorneys to the campus for speaking engagements, and by visiting law schools.

Undergraduate Anthropology Organization (UAO) is for undergraduates who wish to learn more about the Anthropology Department and opportunities for anthropology majors. General meetings are held throughout the semester. These include a continuing speaker series on careers in anthropology, panel discussions and lectures, as well as social activities. The organization is closely involved with faculty and is regularly asked for input on departmental matters.

Undergraduate Psychology Club is designed for students interested in the field of psychology. It assists students with questions about their major, classes and professors, and arranges internships. Speakers come in to speak about their professions and interesting psychology findings. This is a great way to become involved with the psychology major.
