Music, Dance and Entertainment Ballroom Dance was formed with the purpose of enhancing cultural and social development in a student community. The club provides lessons with different degrees of difficulty in dancing technique. All are welcome and no experience is necessary. Binghamton Crosbys are Binghamtons only all-male a cappella group and one of the top five a cappella groups in the nation. The group consistently appears in the national semifinals of the NCCAs (National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella) sponsored by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America and Smoking Fish Records, and appeared at the national finals in 1997-98 at Carnegie Hall. Performing a repertoire of pop, rock, R&B and jazz music, the Crosbys present two large concerts each year on campus and appear at many campus events. The group also takes an annual winter tour to Long Island and the spring tour has included treks to Washington, D.C., California and Florida. Binghamton University Gospel Choir (BUGC) is dedicated to spreading the gospel through song. The choir performs at various colleges, community and on-campus events. The BUGC presents the context, purpose and cultural aspects of gospel music in appreciation of its Afro-American roots of hymn singing, spirituals, blues and jazz. No auditions are necessary; all that is needed is an open heart and mind. Binghamtonics is Binghamtons oldest coed a cappella singing ensemble. Its unique style showcases an entertaining blend of jazz, contemporary, popular and alternative songs. In addition to organizing their own show each semester, the "Tonics" perform for various college and community functions, BU basketball games and charity benefit shows, and have appeared on local radio and television. Binghamtonics accomplishments include the production of two albums, *instruments not included (1993) and Hooked on Tonics (1995), and various tours and competitions along the East Coast. This ensemble is entirely student run, and prides itself on presenting the humorous and offbeat as well as the mainstream. Auditions are held each semester. Black Dance Repertoire (BDR) of Binghamton University was founded by three dynamic women in 1985. Our purpose is to entertain the campus community with an outlook on dance in all its forms. We are a diverse organization that has aspired to bring about cultural awareness through the art of black dance. Since its inception, BDR has provided unique expression of an art that is dynamic and vibrant in its rhythmic motion. Childrens Dance Theatre (CDT) This performing group is open to all students. All levels of ability are needed. The group organizes in early September and rehearses throughout the fall semester. It encourages student choreography and is dedicated to developing a culturally diverse program. In the spring semester CDT performs for elementary school children in the local schools and for pre-school children on campus. The DJ Club was formed to help promote and publicize DJs, MCs and producers. If you are into spinning records or producing artists, or you just like hip-hop, rap, reggae or any kind of music, come on down and well take it to the next level. BACK TO TOP Harpur Chorale is a select chamber choir of 28 singers. The group maintains a busy schedule of on- and off-campus appearances, including multi-night madrigal dinners and spring tours that have taken the chorale all over the United States, to Puerto Rico and to Europe. The chorale was recently featured on a nationally broadcast PBS radio special, Days of Awe: Music of the Jewish High Holy Days. The group performs music of all styles and periods appropriate for the small chamber choir, with special emphasis on the a cappella literature. Participants may receive up to two credits through the Music Department. Auditions are held each semester during the first week of classes. University Programming Board (UPB) The University Programming Board is the organization responsible for planning events for the entire campus. Our two annual festivals, Homecoming and Spring Fling, bring out campus spirit in day-long events. We are responsible for screening recently released movies and cult classics in the Lecture Hall on Friday and Saturday nights. In past years, musical groups such as Cypress Hill, Belly, Living Colour and 10,000 Maniacs have performed.
