About 400 students from 33 schools and 12 school districts will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, in the Osterhout Concert Theater for the 36th Annual Poetry and the Children Day. After the opening presentation, students will present their poems at 11 a.m. throughout the Fine Arts Building. This year’s guest poet is professor Liz Rosenberg, author of more than 30 award-winning books, including novels, poetry, and more than 20 books for young readers. The program, which brings students together for a day of poetry readings, was established as a memorial to Robert Pawlikowski. A published poet, creative writing instructor and campus administrative assistant, Pawlikowski drowned in 1975 while on vacation with his family. The event is a tribute to the efforts that Pawlikowski made during his lifetime in nurturing the expressive and intellectual powers of his students as well as those of his own children.

Scott writes: “Consuming Spirits weaves a complicated, intoxicating spell and…the fact that these realms are represented in exaggerated, often comical pictures does not make them less disturbing…[it creates] a sense of enchantment that turns bad feelings inside out. This movie is…a wonder.” Special note: Sullivan will introduce the film on Friday, April 5, and will answer questions after the screening. Harpur Cinema presents ‘Consuming Spirits’
April 5, 2013 7:30pm
TweetConsuming Spirits (Chris Sullivan, USA, 136 min.) is the final in the “forces of Nature” series of five films to be presented by Harpur Cinema this semester. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and Sunday, April 7, in LH-6. Over 15 years, collaborating with friends and family, Chris Sullivan created his dark and exhilarating exploration of family secrets with pen-and-ink drawings, cut-outs and miniature models. Weaving allusions to film history, with mordant observations that explore the “realms of memory and fantasy,” A.O. Official selection: Tribeca Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Raindance, 2012. Admission is $4. For questions or information, call 607-777-4998.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
April 2, 2013 8:00pm
TweetLes Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, AC-Osterhout Concert Theater. The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, are a company of professional male dancers presenting a playful view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance. As The New York Times noted, “the power of this ballet is how it stands on its own in classical aptitude. In many ways that’s the power of the Trocks too. All jokes aside, they can really dance.” Whether dance novice or aficionado, you are sure to be amused by the Trocks’ performance. Tickets are: general public, $45; faculty/staff and senior citizens, $40; students,$22. Call 607-777-ARTS.
