72 percent of fall sport athletes on America East Academic Honor Roll

The America East Conference has released its 2011 Fall Academic Honor Roll and Binghamton ranks second overall in the conference with 72 percent of its eligible athletes being selected. Those Bearcat athletes competing in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, as well as men’s and women’s cross country, were named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll if they maintained a 3.0 GPA during the semester of competition. The conference also sponsors field hockey in the fall, which was included in the Academic Honor Roll.

The Binghamton women’s soccer team, which advanced to the America East semifinals, placed a conference-best 25 athletes on the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll. The Bearcat men’s soccer team posted 18 selections, while the volleyball squad had nine of its members make the grade. Also having nine of its athletes named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll were both the men’s and women’s cross country teams. All five Binghamton programs had the majority of its athletes selected to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Five of Binghamton’s seven all-conference selections from the fall sports were named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll. Junior back Trey Jasenski was named second-team all-conference in men’s soccer while freshman back Connie Gormley made the America East All-Rookie Team in women’s soccer. Junior middle blocker Alex Roland was a second-team all-conference pick in volleyball, while freshman outside hitter Kristin Hovie was named to the all-rookie squad in the same sport. Junior Vasili Papastrat, meanwhile, placed ninth at the America East men’s cross country championship to earn all-conference honors for the first time in his career.

Maine posted the highest percentage of its eligible athletes being named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll (74%). Hartford tied Binghamton with 72 percent of its athletes selected, while UMBC (67.6%), UNH (65.7%) and Vermont (61.4%) all sent over 60 percent to the honor roll list.

New Hampshire had the most student-athletes (96) named to the Academic Fall Honor Roll. Boston University came in second (76), followed by Vermont (75). Although Binghamton placed fourth in the conference with 70 total selections, the three schools ranked above it sponsor field hockey in addition to the other five sports.
