President appoints interim CIO to oversee ITSTweet
President Harvey Stenger has announced the appointment of JoAnn Navarro as interim chief information officer (CIO) to oversee Information Technology Services. Navarro will retain her title as associate vice president for administrative services and continue to supervise Human Resources, the University Center for Training and Development, and Environmental Health and Safety.
“JoAnn has extensive experience managing people in a number of areas on this campus, and that experience is what we need as we look to ITS to support our ever-evolving campus computing needs,” Stenger said. “She will bring her leadership and relationship-building skills to this new position as we move forward to implement the recommendations of the ITS Task Force.”
Navarro, who came to campus in 1994 and was appointed director of operations in Physical Facilities in 1997, hopes to make a good organization even better. “We’ll have a focus on enhanced customer service and improved communications with our customers,” she said.
Navarro plans to meet with key offices on campus, as well as every employee in ITS to better understand their current job responsibilities and ideas they have to improve efficiency, customer service and better serve the campus. There is the potential to move individuals into different roles in the department, which may better suit their skills. “We’ll be taking a step back and reassessing the organization with the goal of creating a nimble and innovative culture,” she said.
“This is a big, big job,” said James Van Voorst, vice president for administration. “As you look at day-to-day operations, Road Map items and SUNY initiatives, IT touches almost everything, so the opportunities for ITS to better support the campus are in front of us. JoAnn’s knowledge of the campus, with people both inside and outside of ITS, will be a perfect fit to grab onto and take advantage of these opportunities to serve the campus and improve the bridges between ITS and the campus operations. ”
Van Voorst thanked Frank Saraceno and Norm Quinn for stepping up to fill in the ITS administrative positions for the past few months, and for also taking such an active part in the review done by the ITS Task Force, led by Vice President for Research Bahgat Sammakia. Navarro will assume her new role Nov. 1.
