Seven wrestlers place at season-opening tournamentTweet
Binghamton wrestling produced seven placewinners at the season-opening WWsport/Binghamton Open, held Sunday at the Events Center. The non-scoring tournament featured more than 300 wrestlers from 20 teams.
Sophomore Nate Schiedel, ranked 18th at 184 pounds, went 3-1 on the day to place second. He recorded a pin and two decisions before suffering an 8-1 loss in the final to sixth-ranked Steve Bosak of Cornell.
Three Bearcats placed third in their respective draws: senior 141-pound Anwar Goeres, junior 165-pound Matt Kaylor and sophomore197-pound Cody Reed.
Goeres, ranked 20th, went 5-1, losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Zach Kemmer of Penn. Goeres compiled two pins and a major decision and then secured third place with a 3-1 decision over Rider’s Aaron Nestor.
Kaylor, ranked 15th by W.I.N. Magazine, went 4-1 to place third. His only defeat was a 6-0 loss in the semifinals to the eventual champion and sixth-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell. Kaylor rolled to an 8-1 decision over Harvard’s Adam Hogue in his final bout. Among his wins was an impressive 21-14 decision over highly regarded Cornell recruit Marshall Peppelman.
Reed went 4-1 to secure third place at 197. His only defeat came in the semifinals at the hands of eventual champion Cameron Simaz of Cornell.
Other placewinners included sophomore Donnie Vinson (4th at 149), senior Ryan McGarity (4th at 174) and sophomore Dan Riggi (5th at 133). Riggi went 5-2 on the day, with one loss coming to the champion. Vinson compiled two pins and a technical fall for his wins.
