The Binghamton softball team, which posted a Division I era program-record 24 wins during the 2010 season, has also earned high marks in the classroom.
According to the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association), Binghamton posted the eighth-highest team GPA during the 2009-10 academic year (3.48). In addition, nine players from last year’s squad were named NFCA Scholar Athletes.
In order to earn NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete must have attained at least a 3.5 GPA for the 2009-10 academic year. Senior catcher Deannie Plemon, junior outfielder Meghan Tucker and sophomore Rhoda Marsteller, all of whom earned all-conference honors last season, were among the BU players selected.
Also on the list are junior infielders Bri Andrews and Chelsea Horne and senior first baseman Stephanie DeLuca, all of whom are members of the National College Athlete Honors Society. Former players Kelly Schuldt, Stephanie Kolodziejski and Stephanie Valencia were the other three players cited.
“Our players worked very hard last year both on the field and in the classroom,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “They did an excellent job setting new expectations for BU softball and I am very excited about the future of the program.”
