Junior midfielder Ryan Walter scored his first goal of the season, leading Binghamton (3-4-3, 1-0-1 AE) to a 1-0 victory over Vermont (6-4-3, 1-1-0 AE) in an America East men’s soccer game before 2,240 fans at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Oct. 9.
With the victory, the Bearcats are now 3-0-3 in their last six matches.
Walter found himself in the right place at the right time in the 14th minute of the game. Sophomore midfielder Adam Whitehead fired a long blast that Vermont goalkeeper Xan Rouselle was unable to handle. The ball came to Walter, who was stationed at the mouth of the goal. He then knocked it into the net.
“Tonight was a great win in a very competitive match,” head coach Paul Marco said. “I thought our guys were great tonight.”
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chris Hayen made three saves to record his third solo shutout of the season. Hayen, who held the Cantamounts scoreless for just the fourth time in 13 games, was named America East Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.
