Women’s soccer shut out by Seton Hall, Iona

Host Seton Hall scored the game’s only goal in the 35th minute and the Pirates shut out the Binghamton women’s soccer team, 1-0, on Sept. 20, in South Orange, N.J.

Meghan Hayes headed in a cross shot 34:51 into the contest and Seton Hall built a 27-7 advantage in shots to keep the Bearcats at bay. The Pirates were coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 24 Rutgers in their last outing.

Freshman keeper Carrie Martin made six saves for Binghamton.

“We played a pretty good first half,” head coach Sarah McClellan said. “We kept it fairly even and only gave up the goal off a mix-up the box. Other than that, we didn’t give them very many opportunities and I was encouraged to play pretty even against such a strong team. But we aren’t a 90-minute team yet and we’re going through some growing pains. We have to continue to work hard every day to have that competitiveness throughout the entire game. We’re looking forward to putting it all together for conference play.”

On Sept. 15, the Bearcats fell at home to Iona, 1-0, despite having a 23-5 shots margin.
