Wrestling team wins at ColumbiaTweet
Binghamton wrestling (8-3) won seven of 10 bouts, including two by pin and two more major decisions to power past Columbia, 29-13, on Jan. 8 from University Gymnasium in New York City. The victory delighted a strong contingent of Bearcats alumni and supporters, who attended the match and a reception afterward.
The Bearcats’ three nationally ranked wrestlers all won. Ninth-ranked sophomore Nate Schiedel (19-4 overall, 8-2 duals) posted a 19-7 major decision at 184 pounds in the day’s second match. Sophomore 149-pound Donnie Vinson, ranked 18th, remained perfect in duals with a 12-2 major (14-2 overall, 11-0 duals). Junior No. 19 Justin Lister (8-2) made quick work of his opponent at 165 pounds with a pin in 1:54—his second straight victory after bumping up a weight class to start the second semester.
Sophomore 125-pound newcomer Derek Steeley made an impact in his first match as a Bearcat, posting a pin in 1:57. Steeley is a former Oklahoma state high school champion who transferred to Binghamton this month.
Junior 157-pound Matt Kaylor (16-5, 10-1) rolled to a 12-5 win and senior Anwar Goeres (11-3, 6-2) returned from an injury that sidelined him for nearly a month to earn a 9-3 decision at 141.
