Hiroki Sayama, assistant professor of bioengineering and systems science and industrial engineering, was invited as a keynote speaker to the Fourth International Workshop on Guided Self-Organization (GSO 2011) in Hatfield, UK, in September. He gave a talk on “Guiding Designs of Self-Organizing Swarms: Interactive and Automated Approaches”.

Laura Bronstein, associate professor and chair of social work, has been selected by the Social Work Leadership Institute from over 70 Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) programs nationwide as the 2011 Outstanding Dean/Director. The award recognizes outstanding leaders in social work aging education and service and is a recognition of the leadership, creativity and inspiration that Bronstein brings to these projects. The award will be presented to Bronstein on Friday, Oct. 28, in Atlanta, Ga.

Susan Deer Cloud ’80, MA ’82, was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship for 2011. Deer Cloud, a poet, was one of 105 people to win the award out of 3,692 applicants in five categories. The foundation is the nation’s largest provider of funding, information and services to individual artists. Deer Cloud, a former lecturer at Binghamton University, has two books forthcoming.

The Career Development Center received a Certificate of Appreciation from the New York Regional Office of the Peace Corps for hosting a Peace Corps 50th Anniversary celebration, citing that Binghamton University’s commitment to service and global learning is truly admirable. Since 1966, more than 240 Binghamton alumni have served in 75 countries, the largest number in all of SUNY.
