Corpse flower prepares to open| June 18, 2013
The Amorphophallus titanum (corpse flower) is getting ready to open in the E.W. Heier Teaching Greenhouse. This flowered for the first time in 2010, and is about to repeat that stinky performance! Don't miss out! Believed to be the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world, the corpse flower is certainly one of the most unforgettable. The greenhouse now on extended hours in anticipation of the full bloom, weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Hours will be extended into the night of the full opening. Crane at Library and Events Center on Wednesday| June 18, 2013
A crane will be positioned in the L permit parking lot adjacent to the Library from 7 a.m. to approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 19. Some disability parking will still be permitted during this time. The crane will be removing HVAC equipment from a roof. The crane will then move to the front of the Events Center to remove fan coils from 10 a.m. to approximately noon Wednesday, June 19. Some parking spaces in the row closest to the Events Center entrance will not be available during this time.

Harpur College names two associate deans| June 17, 2013
Harpur College of Arts and Sciences has announced the appointments of Celia Klin and Florence Margai as associate deans, effective Sept. 1, 2013.
Klin, associate professor of psychology, will serve as associate dean for undergraduate studies and academic affairs. Margai, professor of geography, will serve as associate dean for graduate studies, student success and faculty development.
“We are lucky to have two highly respected researchers and teachers who are equally committed to the development of our academic community,” incoming Harpur College Dean Anne McCall said.
Margai and Klin will join Anna Addonisio, associate dean for administration, in leadership roles within Harpur College.

Klin, who received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. She is a faculty member at the Cognitive and Psycholinguistic Sciences (CAPS) Research Center. Klin specializes in cognitive psychology and her research interests include psycholinguistics, and language comprehension and memory.
“As a former chair of one of Harpur College’s largest and most complex departments, Celia brings valuable personnel and curricular experience to the dean’s office,” McCall said. “In addition to working with many of our faculty governance bodies, Celia will support our involvement in the transdisiplinary areas of excellence (TAEs). Her sizable expertise in the natural sciences will be precious for successful hiring, and she will play a special role in the development of hiring and retention practices that support a diverse workforce.”
Margai, who received her doctorate from Kent State University, most recently served as associate dean of the Graduate School. She has been a member of the University’s Fulbright Committee and co-chaired the Student Success Road Map Team. Margai’s published scholarship focuses on environmental health hazards, environmental justice and equity, and geographies of health and health disparities.
“Florence’s career shines a spotlight on international research and teaching,” McCall said. “As we embrace our goal of increasing graduate student enrollment, Harpur will benefit greatly from experience that Florence gained in the Graduate School and as department chair. Our students will also benefit from her commitment to developing tools that will support their academic and career development. Florence will also play a lead role in faculty development efforts across Harpur College.”

Harpur Reed, best known for his role as chief technology officer for Obama for America, will be the keynote speaker for the 2013 SUNY Critical Issues in Higher Education Conference, Oct. 29-30, in New York City. The conference is titled “Building a Smarter University: Big Data, Innovation and Ingenuity” and will examine how the big data movement could help build smarter universities – improving the student learning experience, enhancing the research enterprise, supporting effective community outreach, strengthening the education pipeline and advancing the university infrastructure. Watson Advising Office to move today and Tuesday| June 17, 2013
The Watson Advising Office will move to its new location in the M Pod of the Engineering Building today and Tuesday, June 17 and 18. Communication by phone will be limited during the move, but staff will be monitoring e-mail whenever possible. The office will resume regular operations in the M Pod on Wednesday, June 19.
Physical Facilities service request process changing| June 17, 2013
Physical Facilities is changing its work management software, moving from FAMIS to a new system, Maximo. The conversion is planned to be finalized over the weekend of June 29 and 30. The "go live" date for the new system is Monday, July 1.
Current self-service users will be contacted with instructions on the new system and how to enter service requests through the new portal.

Friendship Family participants needed| June 17, 2013
The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is recruiting new participants for its Friendship Family Program which involves a family or individual from the surrounding community who forms a social relationship with one or more international student(s) enrolled at Binghamton University. This social relationship can consist of family dinners, phone calls, conversations over coffee or tea, attending an event together or going to see the latest movie. Friendship families do not provide housing or financial, academic, medical or psychological assistance.

Water shutdown for Old Champlain on Tuesday| June 17, 2013
There will be a shutdown of water service to Old Champlain beginning at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18. The shutdown will last for approximately 7 hours while a new water line is tied in.
