During Binghamton's first Alumni Leaders Conference, some of the alumni stopped by to offer advice to college seniors about to graduate.

About 400 students from 33 schools and 12 school districts will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, in the Osterhout Concert Theater for the 36th Annual Poetry and the Children Day. After the opening presentation, students will present their poems at 11 a.m. throughout the Fine Arts Building.

This year’s guest poet is professor Liz Rosenberg, author of more than 30 award-winning books, including novels, poetry, and more than 20 books for young readers. She is the editor of five prize-winning poetry anthologies and her work has been featured on Reading Rainbow, in The New York Times and in two documentaries about her life and work. She won an IRA-Children's choice award for her picture book, Monster Mama, which is currently under option to be made into a full-length feature movie.

The program, which brings students together for a day of poetry readings, was established as a memorial to Robert Pawlikowski. A published poet, creative writing instructor and campus administrative assistant, Pawlikowski drowned in 1975 while on vacation with his family. The event is a tribute to the efforts that Pawlikowski made during his lifetime in nurturing the expressive and intellectual powers of his students as well as those of his own children.

This final workshop in the three-part series – “Maximizing Meal Team Nutrition and Metabolism” – will be held from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, in Studio B in the basement of the Lecture Hall. Sarah Thompson, Health and Wellness Studies lecturer, will highlight practical approaches to improve nutrient intake over the course of the day for you and your family.

To honor Patricia W. Human Resources reminds supervisors of “permanent” UUP professionals that evaluations should be completed for May 2012 to May 2013, and a new performance program issued for May 2013 to May 2014. Professionals with “term” or “temporary” appointments have individual evaluative cycles. The appropriate forms may be found on the Human Resources website.

HeartCode BLS is an interactive self-directed learning program which completes all cognitive requirements for the American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course.
• Part I: Cognitive Portion: successfully complete the Part I cognitive portion of the program including two patient scenarios and multiple choice exams online.
• Part II: Skills Portion: once you have completed the Part I portion, you must successfully complete the skills portion using a voice-assisted manikin system. Launched May 3, the new B-Engaged website (created by the merger of the B-Involved and PAWS websites) makes it easy for students to connect with student organizations, explore opportunities to get involved on campus, record their participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities and create an Involvement Transcript. SA-chartered groups can use B-Engaged to advertise events, record volunteer hours, process forms and hold elections. Faculty and staff can also use B-Engaged to promote department events, host an application process for awards or student employment and assign workshop outcomes.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Nieman has announced the appointment of Michael McGoff as senior vice provost.

“Michael has been an invaluable resource for Binghamton University for 45 years,” said Nieman. “In this new capacity, the Division of Academic Affairs will be able to draw on his experience, strategic-thinking abilities and dedication to Binghamton University to make the Road Map a resounding success.”

In addition to his current duties, McGoff will assume important new responsibilities as senior vice provost, providing oversight and coordination for planning, benchmarking, implementation and assessment of the 24 Road Map projects assigned to the Division of Academic Affairs. Working closely with the provost and vice provosts, he will provide leadership for incorporating Road Map strategic priorities, the faculty hiring plan, the transdisciplinary areas of excellence and the division’s ongoing strategic initiatives into a plan that will guide the University’s academic mission for the next five years.

“I’m delighted that Michael is assuming this new role and will use his strong problem-solving and strategic-thinking skills to help us become the premier public university,” said President Harvey Stenger.

The Research Division announces the appointment of Donald “Don” Miller as Director of Grants Financial Management in the office of Sponsored Funds Administration, effective today, May 13. Miller comes from the Research Foundation Central Office with more than 23 years of experience in the fiscal, grants and audit areas of research administration.

Disabled parking spaces are available only for those with designated disabled parking plates or tags. Temporary parking by contractors, state and service vehicles or others is not permitted. Unauthorized vehicles will be ticketed and or towed.

All University employees are invited to participate in the 2013 YMCA Corporate Challenge on Thursday, June 13, at Broome Community College. The events consist of:
• A 5K road race (5:15 p.m.)
• Predicted mile (walk or run) (6 p.m.)
• Relay race (7:30 p.m.)
• Executive mile (8:15 p.m.)
• Awards ceremony (8:30 p.m.)
This friendly competition with other area employers offers a great social, team-building and healthy activity. Athletic ability is not a requirement, just a desire to have a good time! You can come for just one or two events or stay for all. Early registration ends Thursday, May 13. The cost is $12 per participant for the first event and $5 for each additional event.

After May 13, the cost rises to $14 and $7 respectively (by May 28) or $19 and $7 after May 28. Fee includes a YMCA Corporate Challenge t-shirt and the University will provide a shirt for you to wear that evening to show your spirit! Refreshments will be provided.

Peter Knuepfer, associate professor of geological sciences and director of the Environmental Studies Program, has been elected to a two-year term as president of the University Faculty Senate – a full-time commitment that also places him on the SUNY Board of Trustees as a non-voting member. His duties officially begin July 1. In his new role, Knuepfer will have to step aside from advocacy for Binghamton University and the University Centers and become an advocate for all 32 SUNY campuses.
