Provost appoints Deak interim dean of Harpur College

Executive Vice President and Provost Donald Nieman announces that Terrence Deak, professor of psychology, will serve as interim dean of Harpur College during the 2016-17 academic year while the University conducts a national search to replace Anne McCall, who has accepted a position provost at Xavier University of Louisiana. Deak will assume his new duties on July 1.
Deak joined the Binghamton University faculty in 2001 as assistant professor of psychology, earning promotion to full professor in 2014. A behavioral neuroscientist who has conducted path-breaking research on stress and alcohol, he has been instrumental in supporting progress of Binghamton’s Developmental Exposure Alcohol Research Center, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Deak has successfully served in several University-wide leadership positions. Between 2009 and 2013, he served as deputy to President Lois B. DeFleur and chief of staff to Presidents Peter Magrath and Harvey Stenger. Since 2013, he has chaired the Health Sciences Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence Steering Committee.
“Terry is a highly accomplished researcher and teacher who has a broad understanding of the University,” Nieman said. “He is highly collaborative and has an impressive record of working with colleagues to develop and nurture outstanding academic programs and to mentor faculty and students.”
“I’ve worked closely with Terry in his many roles on campus and he has excelled in all of them,” said Stenger. “He has a keen mind, has built strong relationships both on and off campus, and is seen as a leader – an ability that will serve him well as Harpur’s interim dean.”
“Harpur College of Arts and Sciences is an outstanding college with a long a history of academic excellence,” said Deak. “It will be my privilege to serve as interim dean and I am grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and alumni of Harpur College to enable strong forward momentum during this transitional year.”
Communications and Marketing launches new department website

University Communications and Marketing launched a redesigned, reorganized department website April 26. The updated site is based on the University's newest, mobile-first templates. Among the material users will find are University branding/visual identity guidelines and University editorial style guidelines, as well as information on web content management system (OmniUpdate) training and assistance, how to partner with department staff to achieve strategic communications goals and how to request a project. In addition, there is a comprehensive Web Toolkit with best practices and instructions for enhancing webpages within OmniUpdate, and a Brand Toolkit with downloads for logos and templates for brochures, presentations, posters and more. Water main break may affect traffic by Physical Facilities

There is a water main break between the Physical Facilities Building and Central Heating Plant. Minimize traffic in this area. When the contractor arrives for repairs, the roadway may be barricaded off entirely so drivers are asked to use the entrance between Physical Facilities and the Warehouse to access the compound until further notice.
Reminder: State travel to North Carolina prohibited until further notice regardless of fund source

Any state travel to North Carolina, regardless of the funding source, will be banned unless necessary for the enforcement of New York state law, to meet prior contractual obligations or for the protection of public health, welfare and safety. Founding director of LGBTQ Center begins duties today

Chief Diversity Office Valerie Hampton announces the appointment of Kelly Clark as founding director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Center.
Clark has extensive experience as community safety program director and intergenerational programs director of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley in Rochester, N.Y. She has also worked in alumni programs at the University of Rochester, as director of multicultural affairs at SUNY Geneseo, and as special assistant to the president for multicultural programs and affirmative action as well as Educational Opportunity Program counselor at SUNY New Paltz.
In her role, Clark will advance the diversity mission of the University by seeking to create an environment that is inclusive and supportive of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
“It really is the perfect time to build the center,” said Clark. “Unlike many other centers, President Stenger, Valerie Hampton and others who crafted the plan purposefully placed the center in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This will give me the opportunity to work broadly across the entire University, supporting students, faculty and staff as well as gaining support from alumni.”
Clark earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in human development and counseling from the University of Rochester, and her EdD in executive leadership from St. John Fisher College.
She begins her duties at Binghamton today, Monday, April 4.
