Many faculty and staff receive updates from or about graduating seniors in the weeks and months following graduation as they share information about their job searches/continuing education status. While we ask all graduating seniors to complete a survey answering those kinds of questions, not all respond. The correspondence you may receive can help provide a fuller picture of the career pathways of our most recent graduates as we add that to information already collected.

Revenue adjustment deadline is Friday| June 19, 2013
The deadline for submitting revenue adjustment and balance transfer requests to be processed in fiscal year 2012-2013 is end-of-business Friday, June 21. If you have revenue transfers to submit for processing, fill out the request form and email to Erin Neske, director of finance.
Trucks/equipment accessing East Campus Housing site| June 19, 2013
There may be slight delays on East Drive near the Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center on Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, as trucks and equipment will be accessing the East Campus Housing site at the Collegiate Center Drive. Flag persons will be used to manage traffic.

Harpur College names two associate deans| June 17, 2013
Harpur College of Arts and Sciences has announced the appointments of Celia Klin and Florence Margai as associate deans, effective Sept. 1, 2013.
Klin, associate professor of psychology, will serve as associate dean for undergraduate studies and academic affairs. Margai, professor of geography, will serve as associate dean for graduate studies, student success and faculty development.
“We are lucky to have two highly respected researchers and teachers who are equally committed to the development of our academic community,” incoming Harpur College Dean Anne McCall said.
Margai and Klin will join Anna Addonisio, associate dean for administration, in leadership roles within Harpur College.

Klin, who received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. She is a faculty member at the Cognitive and Psycholinguistic Sciences (CAPS) Research Center. Klin specializes in cognitive psychology and her research interests include psycholinguistics, and language comprehension and memory.
“As a former chair of one of Harpur College’s largest and most complex departments, Celia brings valuable personnel and curricular experience to the dean’s office,” McCall said. “In addition to working with many of our faculty governance bodies, Celia will support our involvement in the transdisiplinary areas of excellence (TAEs). Her sizable expertise in the natural sciences will be precious for successful hiring, and she will play a special role in the development of hiring and retention practices that support a diverse workforce.”
Margai, who received her doctorate from Kent State University, most recently served as associate dean of the Graduate School. She has been a member of the University’s Fulbright Committee and co-chaired the Student Success Road Map Team. Margai’s published scholarship focuses on environmental health hazards, environmental justice and equity, and geographies of health and health disparities.
“Florence’s career shines a spotlight on international research and teaching,” McCall said. “As we embrace our goal of increasing graduate student enrollment, Harpur will benefit greatly from experience that Florence gained in the Graduate School and as department chair. Our students will also benefit from her commitment to developing tools that will support their academic and career development. Florence will also play a lead role in faculty development efforts across Harpur College.”

Harpur Reed, best known for his role as chief technology officer for Obama for America, will be the keynote speaker for the 2013 SUNY Critical Issues in Higher Education Conference, Oct. 29-30, in New York City. The conference is titled “Building a Smarter University: Big Data, Innovation and Ingenuity” and will examine how the big data movement could help build smarter universities – improving the student learning experience, enhancing the research enterprise, supporting effective community outreach, strengthening the education pipeline and advancing the university infrastructure. Friendship Family participants needed| June 17, 2013
The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office is recruiting new participants for its Friendship Family Program which involves a family or individual from the surrounding community who forms a social relationship with one or more international student(s) enrolled at Binghamton University. This social relationship can consist of family dinners, phone calls, conversations over coffee or tea, attending an event together or going to see the latest movie. Friendship families do not provide housing or financial, academic, medical or psychological assistance.

Administration Building restroom renovations to begin| June 14, 2013
A project to renovate the women's and men's restrooms (rooms 120 and 124) on the first floor of the Administration Building is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17, with preparation work on Saturday, June 15. These are the restrooms across from AD-148 and they will be totally renovated including new fixtures, partitions, doors and lighting.
There will be a partial water shutdown to the Administration Building beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 15, with no hot water to the Administration Building tower though cold water will be available in the tower. There will be no water service to the first and second floor wing of the Administration Building during this time. Plumbers will be installing isolation valves to prepare for the renovation project. Full water service to the building is expected to be restored late Saturday afternoon.
Demolition of the first-floor restrooms is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17, with renovation to follow. The work will be performed on second shift from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. First floor renovations should be complete by Monday, August 5.

President Stenger announces new role for provost| June 13, 2013
To the Campus Community,
I am announcing that, effective immediately, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Donald Nieman will become Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
In assuming his new role, Executive Vice President and Provost Nieman will be given the authority to handle many of the issues and questions typically brought to the president. Currently, 24 of the top 25 public universities in the nation operate under this structure. Although we are younger and smaller than many of them, as we grow in size and complexity, I believe we must take advantage of the increased effectiveness that this common organizational structure provides.
Placing our chief academic officer on nearly the same plane in the organizational hierarchy as the president will reinforce the strategic importance of advancing our educational and research objectives through a high level of organizational collaboration. While the direct reporting lines of vice presidents will not change, the executive vice president, in consultation with the president, will be responsible for budget, space and resource allocations for all University divisions.
In the coming years, as Binghamton University grows and its reputation expands and strengthens, a fluid and dynamic relationship between the EVP/provost and president will be in place to ensure that matters needing executive attention are handled quickly and effectively. This increased flexibility will prove invaluable in the ever-changing landscape of our campus.
