Eric Foner, Dewitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University, will discuss his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery,” at the 2013 Harvey and Elizabeth Prior Shriber Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, in LH-8. The lecture, hosted by the History Department, is free and open to the public. Foner will talk about the evolution of Lincoln’s views regarding slavery and race in America, indicating how his views changed and whether he should be considered the Great Emancipator.
Foner is considered one of the country’s most prominent historians. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, his books have won the Bancroft Prize and the Lincoln Prize, among other awards. Foner’s publications have concentrated on the intersections of intellectual, political and social history, and the history of race relations in America.
