Recently, a new U.S. law was passed that for a limited amount of time, foreign nationals who do not have a legal status in the United States and who meet certain criteria can apply for deferred action (a delay of any removal or deportation proceeding and a work authorization card). Such persons are usually known as undocumented. The Cornell Farmworkers program is holding a workshop from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9,with attorneys and Cornell law students at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Church, 183 Riverside Drive in Binghamton to help undocumented youth fill out their applications or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
The workshop will help undocumented immigrants under age 31 apply for immigration benefits, which will allow them to work, go to school and get a driver’s license.
Eligible young people include:
· those who were under the age of 31 on June 15, 2012
· those who came to the U.S. under the age of 16
· those who have lived in the U.S. from June 15, 2007 until now
· those who are in school or graduated from high school or obtained a GED certificate.
