FINDING A DOCTOR OR HOSPITAL WHEN USING THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE

When choosing a doctor to visit, or a hospital for treatment in the United States, make sure that the doctor or hospital is part of Aetna's U.S. network as a “preferred provider.”

Be sure to read the document titled “How to Use Your International Student Health Insurance” to understand the rules for using the University Health Service first, and the $50 deductible requirement.

By using a “preferred provider”, you will avoid having to pay the difference between the provider's charge and the rate that the insurance company contracts to pay for a particular service.  For example, if a “non-preferred provider” charged $100.00 for an office visit and HTH Worldwide Insurance Services pays at their contract rate of $75.00 for a “preferred provider”, you will be responsible for the difference of $25.00.

To determine who is a preferred provider, go to
http://www.aetna.com/docfind/disclaimer.jsp?site_id=passport

Complete the information requested under “general search.”

Click "zip code" or "City" depending upon how you want to base your search
(if entering a zip code, select how many miles from your zip code you are willing to travel)

Select a provider category

Select a provider type

For Plan, look at the top of the list, under “Aetna Standard Plans”, and select “Open Choice PPO”

Click "start search"

Choose only doctors and hospitals that are listed under Open Choice PPO.  Otherwise, you will have to pay the difference in cost between what the doctor charges and what the insurance company pays.

NOTE: All of the local hospitals (Binghamton General Hospital, Wilson Regional Medical Center and Lourdes Hospital) are participating “preferred providers” in the AETNA System.
