As a historian of religious traditions, my work deals with the reception of foundational or orthodox religious texts by supposedly radical Christian groups. My dissertation and current research examine sixteenth-century debates over Protestant biblical interpretation. Specifically, I look at the way in which new and reputedly heretical religious communities used older Protestant sources to stake their claims to mainstream legitimacy. I have also published and taught courses on new religious movements in twentieth-century America.
