Student Organizations

Rainbow Pride Union (RPU) was founded in 1971 and continues to grow its mission to provide a safe haven for the LGBTQ community on campus and in the surrounding areas. Through various events and activities, they provide social, political, and creative outlets for members to express themselves. They promote education and awareness concerning LGBTQ issues with an emphasis on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, culture, religion, and identity. RPUs ultimate goal is to instill a sense of pride in the LGBTQ community that remains with members throughout their lives.

SHADES is an organization created to cater to students who are members of the LGBTQIA community and are of color. Members come together to create a safer atmosphere on campus. SHADES is known for its innovative programming and empowers students all over campus through embracing diversity!

Keshet is a subgroup of Hillel that focuses on LGBTQ and Jewish identity.

Campus Departments

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies [WGSS] is a transdisciplinary program for students who wish to explore gender and its relation to other axes of power such as, race, class, ethnicity, nationality, religion and sexuality. WGSS covers a complex variety of theoretical and empirical scholarship both within traditional disciplines and in transdisciplinary frames in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, as well as combinations of the three.

Decker Student Health Services Center provides primary care of acute illness and injury for all registered students at Binghamton University, as well as women's reproductive health care, confidential rapid HIV testing, PrEP, and psychiatric consultation.

University Counseling Center provides comprehensive clinical and referral services to Binghamton University's undergraduate and graduate students. At least one counselor is WPATH certified. The University Counseling Center also works together with the Q Center to offer a professionally run LGBTQ Support Group.

The Office of the Ombudsman is a safe place to voice your concerns, evaluate your situation, organize your thoughts and identify your options when dealing with a problem or concern. The office operates with strict confidentiality and keeps no records identifying visitors. It can be a good first step if you don't know where else to turn or how to proceed.

Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development has been awarded SILVER certification through OUT for Work's Career Center Certification Program. They have a thorough understanding of the complications LGBTQ students may face when looking for internships or jobs after college and resources to help.

Office of International Education and Global Initiatives supports students who want in pursuing Education Abroad. At Binghamton, all students are encouraged to become world wise and take advantage of the many study abroad programs offered through the university. High Hopes Helpline is a student run helpline for those who are feeling stressed, worried, or lonely and could use someone to talk to. Available every night during the Fall and Spring semesters from 8-11 pm.

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) seeks to provide an environment that is welcoming to all gender identities and is not limited to the traditional gender binary (male and female). Binghamton recognizes that same-sex room assignments are not ideal or appropriate for all students. Students who sign up for these areas will be permitted to have roommates, flatmates and suite mates regardless of gender identity. We are able to offer a limited number of gender inclusive housing options in most of the communities.

Gender Neutral Restrooms were created to ensure a safe space on campus for students regardless of gender expression or gender identity. In order to ensure that all students have a place where they feel safe using the restroom, Binghamton University has provided at least one gender-neutral restroom in 18 facilities on campus. Chosen Name Change Policy is coming in early 2019. We anticipate students will be able to make their own changes through their BU account. Until then, students who wish to request a  name change should make an appointment with Dr. Clark at the Q Center. Temporary changes can be made on class rosters, ID cards, and email accounts. Changes cannot be made to financial aid, medical, or employment records.
