Poet Gillan wins prestigious award

Maria Mazziotti Gillan, who directs the creative writing program at Binghamton, received the 2011 Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award. The professor of English, general literature and rhetoric was joined by fellow award-winners John Grisham and Elizabeth Nunez at a dinner put on by Poets & Writers on March 2.

The Writers for Writers Award was established by Poets & Writers in 1996 to recognize authors who have given generously to other writers or to the broader literary community.

Gillan has published 12 books of poetry; her most recent is What We Pass On: Collected Poems 1980–2009 (Guernica Editions, 2010).
