In 2006, just months after I closed on my first house, I was ordered to evacuate because of historic flooding. My home narrowly escaped. Now, five years later — with more furniture and countless hours of improvements to make it my own — my home is again in the crosshairs of the raging waters of the Susquehanna River, only a few hundred yards away. Soon, flashing red lights jump around my living room and a there’s a knock at the door: it’s a Vestal firefighter ordering me to pack my belongings and evacuate immediately.
