Admission Requirements

To be eligible for graduate study, you must:

• Provide a complete set of your undergraduate (and, if applicable, graduate) transcripts showing one of the following:
  • You have earned a bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university
  • You are within one academic year of earning a bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university
  • You are eligible to apply as part of a memorandum of understanding between your current institution and Binghamton University
• Have earned, at minimum, one of the following:
  • A 3.0 GPA over your entire undergraduate career
  • A 3.0 GPA during last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits of your undergraduate degree, with most courses graded regularly (not as "pass/fail")
  • A 3.0 GPA in a graduate degree, with most courses graded regularly (not as "pass/fail")
  • In consideration of the different grading scales used around the world, the Department of Mathematical Sciences evaluates international transcripts to determine on a case-by-case basis whether they demonstrate one of the above requirements.

Expected background of applicants

• Minimum mathematical background (admission preference will be given to applicants with more than the minimum):
  • Two semesters of calculus
  • One semester of statistics
  • Knowledge of matrix algebra
• It is preferred that the applicant's degree is in a STEM subject area or other quantitative oriented areas such as finance, accounting, business or management.

All applicants must submit the following:

1. Online graduate degree application with application fee
2. Transcript(s) (Scanned copies of the official transcript are preferred. Web printouts of the unofficial transcript are not acceptable. Details)
3. Three letters of recommendation
4. Personal statement of 2 to 3 pages describing reasons for pursuing the graduate study, career aspirations, special interests within the field, and any unusual features of the applicant's background that might need explanation or be of interest to the graduate admissions committee
5. Résumé or curriculum vitae
6. Official GRE (General) scores. Although the applicants are welcome to submit GRE (Subject in Mathematics) scores, these scores are not necessary for the admission.

International students must also submit:

1. International Student Financial Statement (ISFS) form
2. Official bank statement or other financial documentation
3. Proof of English proficiency such as official TOEFL and IELTS scores (There are minimum requirements from the Graduate School for TOEFL and IELTS scores. Details)

Application Deadline

MAS applicants who intend to continue as PhD students

Our MAS program is designed to be a professional degree program, preparing students to work as professionals after graduation. For applicants who intend to continue study in a PhD program in mathematics or statistics, please be advised that such a transition is not guaranteed. Moreover, students are advised to take the PhD level courses Math 571 and Math 579 (Advanced Probability and Advanced Statistical Inference), in addition to Math 501 and Math 502, and courses Math 505 and Math 506 (Analysis I and Analysis II) for the proper mathematical foundation that many PhD programs in mathematics or statistics may require.
