Teaching / Research Focus: Vibrations, acoustics, fatigue, noise, biomechanics.
Dr. Miles’ current research interests include the development of biologically-inspired microacoustic sensors. His work with Ron Hoy and Daniel Robert of the Section of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell and the University of Bristol, respectively, led to the discovery of a highly innovative mechanism for directional hearing in the fly, Ormia ochracea. In a project funded by NIH, he is currently developing directional microphones for hearing aids that are inspired by Ormia’s ears. Dr. Miles’ course offerings are in the areas of vibrations, dynamics, and acoustics. He has published over seventy scholarly articles and has received the University Award for Excellence in Teaching; the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching; the Research Foundation’s Outstanding Inventor Award; the Chancellor's Award for Research in Science, Engineering and Medicine; the Research Foundation’s Innovation, Creation and Discovery Award; and the Research Foundation’s 2005 First Patent Award.
