Binghamton University students celebrate Spring Fling weekend

2003-04-18

Binghamton University students will officially bid adieu to cold weather during Spring Fling festivities this weekend. Students will usher in the spring with one of the University’s oldest traditions, the annual “Stepping on the Coat,” and a jam-packed schedule of music, food and fun. The events are open to the community.

Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in front of the upper level of the University Union.

A BU tradition, the “Stepping on the Coat” ceremony, is scheduled to begin at 1:15 pm. A rite of spring since 1962, the coat-stomping ritual has, according to students, become vital to the onset of warm weather after Binghamton’s long winters.

The Keith King BMX Stunt Team will be at Spring Fling all day with shows at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Using specially built ramps, the team will show off their extreme biking skills. Reggae fans can cheer on their favorite artists at the reggae competition scheduled for 3:45 p.m. A variety of student bands and musicians, including Andy Grammer, Neverman and the Joe Rogers Band, will provide musical entertainment throughout the day.

Inflatables and novelties lined up to entertain the crowds include a mechanical bull, an obstacle course, sumo wrestling suits, bumper cars and bouncy boxing. Magician Jon Price and palm reader Peter Long will add a mystical note to the festivities

Spring Fling festivities will continue on Sunday, April 27, when students host the community at the fifth annual Picnic in the Park from noon to 5 p.m. at Recreation Park in Binghamton. Free food including hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, watermelon and cotton candy will be served. Free entertainment is also scheduled throughout the day including face painting, bubbles, balloons and bands.

Spring Fling is sponsored by the Student Association’s University Programming Board, the Senior Class, Off Campus College Meeting. the Office of Campus Activities and Orientation, and the Division of Student Affairs. For more information about Spring Fling, contact 607-777-2811 or 607-777-6503.
