New clinic offers geriatric assessment, consultation services

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University in partnership with Lourdes Hospital, has opened the Memory Clinic on campus to offer geriatric assessments, education, consultation and case management services for elderly community members.

The clinic, which is coordinated through the Decker School’s Elder Services Center, is located in room 337 in the Academic B building and operates on an appointment only basis on alternate Thursday evenings of every month. Appointments begin at 6 p.m.

The Memory Clinic offers geriatric assessments, including consolidation of past medical records and mental, functional and environmental evaluations. Additionally, the clinic provides diagnostic testing, consultation and case management services. Families of elderly patients will also be served through a range of programs including caregiver stress assessments and stress management techniques.

During the consultation phase of patient visits, Dr. Jerome Mikloucich from Lourdes Hospital will work closely with Elder Services staff, Decker faculty and nurse practitioner students to develop a diagnosis and recommendation report. This information will be sent to the patient’s primary care physician, who will then review the recommendations for follow-up action.

Clients are currently being sent to the clinic through physician and agency referrals, and word of mouth. Medicare covers consultation fees if a primary care physician has referred a patient. There is no charge for the counseling, education or referral services provided by the Elder Service Center.

With close to 40 family nurse practitioner and geriatric nurse practitioner students involved in the program, the Memory Clinic provides invaluable geriatric consultation experience. In addition, the clinic will provide a much-needed resource to area senior citizens and their families.
