Ross Fund Announces Community Project Grants

2011-06-14

BINGHAMTON, NY -- The Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome’s Community Literacy program and the Union-Endicott School District’s United States-Chinese Student Exchange program have been chosen for this year’s round of funding from the Stephen David Ross University and Community Projects Fund.

Since its inception, the Ross Fund has provided money for creative and innovative cooperative efforts between the University and local non-profit organizations to enhance the quality of life in Greater Binghamton.  After review by a panel of University and community representatives, two projects will receive a total of $9,500.

The Boys and Girl’s Club of Western Broome’s Community Literacy initiative is tied to the Student United Way of Binghamton University. The grant totaling $3,000 will be used to expand this program and will inspire children to develop literacy skills and a love of reading by providing a place and opportunities to read together on a daily basis. The program will also offer opportunities for children and teens to work one-on-one with a literacy tutor; increase reading comprehension and retention; foster imagination through reading; and encourage families to read together.

The second Ross Fund grant will go to toward strengthening the links between the U-E School District and the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University.  An award of $6,500 will be given to support U-E’s US-Chinese Student Exchange, which was created as a cultural exchange program between students at U-E and China. The program will build a connection and interest in the Chinese language and culture, while creating a network of support and learning between the Chinese and American students.

Applications for funding are reviewed annually and must include a University partner and a community partner.  For more information, visit http://www2.binghamton.edu/giving/ross-fund, call 607-777-6927 or email clupo@binghamton.edu.
