DeFleur appointed to Commission on Higher Education for New York State

Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur has been appointed to Governor Eliot Spitzer’s New York state Higher Education Commission. The Commission is charged with identifying ways of improving the quality of higher education in New York.

“I am honored to have been appointed to the Higher Education Commission and am looking forward to working on the ambitious agenda that Governor Spitzer has established for this group,” said DeFleur, who attended the announcement of the Commission. “In Governor Spitzer’s remarks, he emphasized how essential higher education institutions are to the future of New York State and in particular, to the upstate region.”

The Commission will study the current higher education system and make recommendations about improving access to the state’s public higher education system; expanding its degree programs to reflect state and regional economic development objectives; and preparing community college graduates for a smooth transition to four-year institutions and/or obtain high value jobs upon graduation. The Commission will also look for opportunities to enhance the capacity of the state’s university research centers to regain New York’s preeminent status in academic research while providing additional opportunities for high value employment.

The Commission will also make recommendations that address flexibility on the systems’ individual campuses to attract the best and brightest students and faculty and enlisting them in the service of the economic, humanitarian and civic needs of their communities.

DeFleur has been a leader in national higher education groups, including chairing the board of directors of both the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the American Council on Education – two of the nation’s largest and most prestigious higher education associations.  She also served as a member of the New York State Blue Ribbon Panel on School Leadership, convened by the New York State Board of Regents, to discuss recommendations for ensuring quality school leaders across the state. In 2006, DeFleur served on one of the 13 policy advisory committees that helped guide Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer and Lt. Governor-elect David Paterson in their transition efforts.
