Binghamton University students celebrate Spring Fling weekend
Binghamton University students will officially bid adieu to cold weather and welcome the warm during Spring Fling festivities. Students will usher in the spring with one of the University’s oldest traditions, the annual ‘Stepping on the Coat’ and a jam-packed schedule of music, food and fun. The events are open to the community.
Festivities begin at noon Saturday, April 29, in front of the upper level of the University Union and feature food, fun, games, rides and giveaways. The University will also be part of the mtvU “Campus Invasion Tour ‘06” featuring a number rising rocks bands. As part of the tour, mtvU will present an interactive village where attendees can get free stuff, meet the bands during autograph signings and participate in a range of activities.
Other activities include a garage sale, carnival rides, interactive booths and vendors. Free food including hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, lemonade and iced tea will be served.
The ‘Stepping on the Coat’ ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 pm. A rite of spring since 1962, the coat-stomping ritual has, according to students, become vital to the onset of warm weather after Binghamton’s long winters.
Spring Fling will close with a live performance at 6 p.m. by up-and coming artists Motion City Soundtrack, Straylight Run and hellogoodbye .
Spring Fling is sponsored by a selection of campus offices and organizations including the Student Association, the Office of Campus Life and the Division of Student Affairs.
