University Fest, Free Books Return to Binghamton University
The return of students to campus kicks off in its traditional manner again this year with University Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 28. The event welcomes visitors and the campus community to the Peace Quad to celebrate the beginning of the new academic year.
As always, University Fest will include a free book giveaway, free soda, kids’ games, giant inflatables, Jon Bon Fed’s caricatures, the Ross Park Zoomobile and plenty of free entertainment from local bands. Additions to the fest this year include bumper cars and a carousel.
“This event began 11 years ago as a way to extend a hand to the community as we welcome new students to campus,” said President Lois B. DeFleur. “We continue to invite our neighbors to campus, -- especially those who have never visited us before -- for University Fest. It offers the perfect opportunity for a day of family fun and the chance to see the campus.”
Musical performances start at 11 a.m. with Joe Rogers, the trio featuring Christian Linsey on drums, Pat Malone on bass and Joe Rogers on guitar and vocals getting the music started with original, passionate rock combined with fiery lyrics.
At 12:15 p.m. Rezi takes the stage. An original band of five, Rezi will take the crowd from progressive rock to jazz to fusion to Latin and class rock ’n’ roll. Sometimes Never performs at 1:30 p.m. This Long Island-based rock band includes brothers Nik and Greg Tarascio and light verses with “hit you in the chest” choruses and strong drum presence. Musical entertainment wraps up with Oshe’s performance at 3 p.m. An instrumental, improvisational quartet, Oshe plays a thick, rhythmic mesh of groove fusion and explosive improvisation to keep the crowd on its feet.
University Fest is sponsored by Binghamton University, the Student Association and the Division of Student Affairs.
