Slam Poet and Teacher Advocate to Talk to Incoming Freshmen

2004-08-23

Performance poet Taylor Mali, four-time winner of the national poetry slam championship, will speak to freshmen at the new student convocation Thursday, August 26, in the Osterhout Concert Theater in the Anderson Center.

A professional spoken word artist known for his appearances on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, Mali is a strong advocate for the teaching profession. A former teacher himself, he received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2001 to develop “Teacher! Teacher!” a one-man show about poetry and teaching that won the best one-man show at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival that year. He hopes to cause one thousand people to become teachers by the year 2006.

Students will also hear from President Lois B. DeFleur at the program, which begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m.
