Psychologist, researcher to discuss male body image

Psychologist and author Roberto Olivardia will discuss “Men, Muscles and Masculinity: The Importance of Body Image in Today's Males,” at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23, in Lecture Hall 10 on the Binghamton University campus. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of the University’s Eating Awareness Committee’s celebration of Health and Wellness Month.

Olivardia, a clinical instructor of psychology at Harvard Medical School, maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Arlington, Mass., where he specializes in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit disorder in adolescents and adults. In addition to his clinical work, Olivardia is an active researcher in the field of body image in males.

He is managing editor of the International Journal of Men’s Health, and serves on the editorial boards of Body Image and the Psychology of Men and Masculinity journals. Olivardia is co-author of The Adonis Complex, which focuses on male body image problems such as eating disorders, BDD, steroid use and cosmetic surgery.

The program is sponsored by BU’s Eating Awareness Committee. For more information, call 607-777-2821.
