2004-02-12

Arnon Perlman, chief spokesman and head of communications for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, will speak at Binghamton University at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, in Lecture Hall 2 on the campus. Perlman will discuss Israel's role as the only democracy in the Middle East and offer perspective, as a former journalist and current media adviser, on Israel's coverage in the media. His remarks will be followed by a question and answer session.

The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to his role as chief spokesman, Perlman also serves as a member of Prime Minister Sharon’s think tanks in the political, economic and foreign policy fields. Prior to his current role, Perlman owned and operated a consulting company, which specialized in crisis management, strategic counseling and public relations for large public bodies such as the Jewish Agency and the Rabin Medical Center. From 1996 to 1997, Perlman served a spokesman for the Tel-Aviv-Yaffo municipality.

A former economic journalist for the Telegraph, Perlman wrote news article and columns on public economy, health, education and the Labor Federation. He also served as chief of reporters for Ha’aretz, a leading Israeli newspaper, where he managed and coordinated news and feature writers.

Perlman’s presentation is co-sponsored by Hillel, Harpur College, the Judaic Studies Department, the Middle East North African Studies program, and Caravan for Democracy, an initiative of the Jewish National Fund, Media Watch International and Hamagshimim.
