Binghamton University named to top twenty of schools using Twitter
Binghamton University is one of the top twenty schools using Twitter among the U.S.News and World Report’s "Top 100 Colleges and Universities," according to rankings by UniversitiesandColleges.org.
Binghamton’s Twitter account ranked 15 for the number of “tweets” per day. A “tweet” is a short message broadcast using micro-blogging site Twitter to users on mobile phones and computers. Binghamton also ranked 18 for the total number of followers, placing well above schools such as Harvard and Columbia.
Twitter users can select to “follow” Binghamton’s Twitter updates for the latest University news. The Binghamton University Facebook and YouTube pages are also linked to Twitter so fans can follow the University through either forms of social media.
The UniversitiesandColleges.org Twitter rankings are based on a school’s total number of accounts, total number of followers and number of followers per account. Measurement categories also considered total number of users following, number of users following each account, total number of tweets per day, and the tweets per account each day. The statistics were collected during September 2009 from Twitter.com with additional statistics coming from TweetStats. Only accounts officially affiliated with university administrations were included.
Twitter, a free social networking and micro-blogging service, allows users to send and receive messages known as tweets. Users can post messages of up to 140 characters to describe their daily activities and thoughts for other to see. Twitter has quickly been becoming one of the most popular social networking available.
