Baker teaches unique cake decorating techniques to students at BHS

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton High School “Culinary Arts 1” class received a visit from Binghamton University-Sodexo Campus Services Baker Tom Cady. The class, instructed by educator Naomi Aronson, participated in a lesson and demonstration of professional cake decorating techniques.

Cady provided the students with both basic and advanced applications used in the cake decorating profession.  Samples of his work on projects such as wedding cakes, specialty birthday cakes and the unique Berlin Wall cake that was created for Binghamton University earlier this year, were also provided.

Students had an opportunity for “hands on” training by using a pastry bag, sampling icing varieties, flower making, piping borders, cake leveling and the use of Fondant. The class concluded with a Q&A session regarding pursuing a career as a Chef/Baker.

This unique classroom experience was made possible by Broome-Tioga BOCES “School to Careers” program and is supported by Sodexo at Binghamton University.
