Nominations accepted for Who’s Who Among Students
The office of Campus Activities and Orientation will accept nominations for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges until 5 p.m. Monday, November 24.

The program recognizes students each year for their outstanding contributions in campus leadership, scholarship and achievements. The nominees also receive campus recognition in the Honors Day program.

The campus nominating committee, which consists of faculty, staff and students, will evaluate nominations based on scholarship ability, participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities, citizenship and service to school and community and potential for future achievement. Students must also have a minimum 3.3 GPA and be in good judicial standing.

Faculty and staff should submit junior, senior or matriculated graduate student nominations. Students can also nominate themselves. Nominees are encouraged to include a resume or listing of their involvements and achievements with their forms. The information will provide the committee with a basis for its decision.

Memorial service for Professor Piaker Monday
A campus memorial service will take place for Philip Piaker, distinguished service professor emeritus, from 4-5 p.m. Monday, November 24, in FA-Casadesus. A reception will follow the service at 5 p.m.

Piaker, who died in October, helped founded the School of Management, where he taught for 40 years and was named a distinguished service professor.

Piaker served as a chair of the New York State Board of Public Accountancy and was a former member of the University Foundation Board of Directors.

Binghamton goes Caribbean this weekend
The Caribbean Student Association’s 24th Annual Carnival will take place Saturday, November 22, beginning Caribbean Week.

The event, will begin with a day show from 11 4 p.m. A concert showcasing the talent and culture of the student population will be offered that evening, beginning at 6 p.m. and lasting until 4 a.m. The week’s other events include an AIDS/HIV forum, cultural jeopardy, Caribbean karaoke and a showing of the film Y Tu Mama Tambien. Time and locations will be announced.

Tickets for students are $38 and for non-BU students, $46. The day show is $2 and food will be served. For more information, call 777-2105

Business startup training offered
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a small business start-up training program in its classroom at 224 Water St. in Binghamton.

During three consecutive Tuesday classes on December 2, 9 and 16, participants will learn the tricks of the trade from professionals on how to assess, plan and start a business. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will discover how to predict business success, finance and market products and services, and comply with government regulations.

University to hold social work information session
The Division of Social Work in the School of Education and Human Development will hold an information session from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 20, in AAB-229, for students interested in pursuing a master’s degree in social work.

The session will describe the program and curriculum, as well as provide admissions and financial aid information. Full-time and part-time study is available. For more information about the information session or to register, call 777-5999.

BU selected for college Federal Reserve challenge
A five-person team of students from economics will test its knowledge of the Federal Reserve system Monday, November 24, at the College Fed Challenge.

Sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the challenge will pit BU against 11 other colleges and universities from the Northeast, including Rutgers, Pace, New York University and Barnard/Columbia. BU’s team includes Edwin Batista, Brandon Clar, Sonya Pal, Kevin Suen and Shu Wai Wan and will be supported by faculty advisor Kenny Christianson.

Participation involves a 20-minute presentation and a 15-minute question and answer session led by a panel of economics professionals, college faculty and fed officials.

The winning team will receive $25,000 for its university, $20,000 for the students to share and $5,000 for the faculty advisor. The second place team will receive $15,000 for the university, $12,500 for the students to share and $2,500 for the faculty advisor.

SOM students vie for title in business analysis competition
Three teams will compete Monday, November 24, as students in the School of Management participate in the undergraduate case competition.

The contest, which began with approximately 37 teams of five or six students in the global strategic management class, required each team over the course of a week to analyze a business case and present their analysis to a panel of judges composed of SOM faculty.

The faculty panel cut the teams down to three, which will present their analyses to a panel of judges of senior executives from Southern Tier firms and SOM faculty beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday, in LH-8. The presentations are free and open to the public.

The Office of Residential Life is teaming with the Salvation Army for Hand To Heart in hopes of making the holiday season a little brighter for needy children in the area. Each department and faculty member will receive information. For more information, contact Darcy Johnson at or call 777-2830.

Student Opinion of Teaching Survey requests are available online at until December 5. Faculty must provide their social security number to access the secured site. After requesting SOOT forms, faculty are asked to print the confirmation and instruction sheet for use during the administration. Forms will be delivered within three to four working days of requests. Watson faculty should not use the site, as their SOOT forms are handled through the Watson dean’s office. Supplies for the food pantry (located within Financial Aid office) are running low. All offerings of canned or boxed food items along with baby supplies are welcome. Anyone who needs food items or supplies should inquire at the Financial Aid reception desk in SW-109.

Rosemary Arrojo, professor of comparative literature and director of CRIT/TRIP, will speak at 2 p.m. Friday, November 21, in LT-1307 on “Translation, Transference and Influence: The Exemplary Case of Borges and Whitman.” The event is free and open to the public.
