Ritter to head communications and marketing

Christopher Ritter has been named the new associate vice president of University communications and marketing, effective October 15. He replaces John Hachtel, who last year accepted a position at Auburn University in Alabama.

Most recently, Ritter served as director of University marketing at Clarkson University in Potsdam. Among his accomplishments, he helped to develop and implement Clarkson's first strategic marketing plan and developed a regional target-market program, which increased applications by 41 percent and deposits by 31 percent in its first year, earning a 5:1 return on investment over two years.

Ritter began his career in marketing at the Oneida Daily Dispatch and then joined Oneida Silversmiths as a copywriter. In 1980, Ritter joined Eric Mower and Associates Inc. in Syracuse as a copywriter. During the next 19 years, he assumed new responsibilities and eventually became a partner and director of client services.

Ritter said he looks forward to working with the University to build upon its communications and marketing efforts. Among his plans, he hopes to work with the campus to focus communication and marketing efforts on key institutional strategic issues.

He also plans to search for innovative ways to build visibility and communicate the distinctiveness of the University to a broader audience.

"I am very excited to be part of the Binghamton University team," Ritter said. "This is an exceptional university and I am looking forward to working with the faculty, staff, students and community partners to build on and enhance Binghamton's reputation."

A native of central New York, Ritter holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from St. Lawrence University in Canton.

BU Foundation undergoes reorganization
Three senior personnel within the University Foundation have been promoted in recognition of their service to BU and their achievements with the $43.7 million Campaign for Binghamton University.

Marcia Craner has been promoted to senior associate vice president for alumni and development. In her new position, she will take on additional supervision of six development officers based in University schools and units while continuing to serve as executive director of the Foundation and managing a portfolio of major donors and donor prospects.

Sheila Doyle, former associate executive director of the Foundation, has been promoted to assistant vice president for development - administration and finance. She will oversee the financial management of the Foundation, including the $38 million endowment, and will supervise a number of operational and financial professionals across several functional areas. She will continue as the primary professional to work with the Foundation board of directors? investment and budget committee and represent the division on University-wide financial management groups.

Mary Woolson has been promoted to assistant vice president for development. Woolson formerly served as senior director of development and director of the campaign.

"I believe the University is fortunate to have development professionals of the caliber of Marcia, Sheila and Mary," said Thomas Kelly, vice president for external affairs. "They have raised and managed millions of dollars in gifts for Binghamton, and we look forward to their leadership of our excellent cadre of advancement officers so that ever-increasing support is attained for our deserving University."

Decker organizes Delaware stroke prevention program
Faculty and students of the Decker School of Nursing are organizing a series of free stroke prevention educational programs for residents in Delaware County.

In recent years, stroke has become one of the top causes of fatalities among men and women in the county. According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, the mortality rate for cerebrovascular accidents or stroke for both men and women is 30 percent higher in the county than the New York state average.

The Kenneth M. Axtell Jr. Foundation has provided a grant to support the FAST program. The program will be expanded into the Hobart and Stamford areas, thanks to the support of the Robert B. & Addie P. Thomson Trust. Holocaust author to discuss survivor testimonies
Holocaust author Lawrence Langer will present ?Holocaust Testimonies? at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 6, in LH-7.

Langer, professor emeritus of English at Simmons College, has interviewed Holocaust survivors for more than 15 years. The author of several books, his publications include Holocaust Testimonies: The Ruins of Memory; Admitting the Holocaust: Collected Essays and The Game Continues: Chess in the Art of Samuel Bak.

Lecture to address treatment of ADHD disorder
The Continuing Education and Outreach program will conduct a seminar for the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 1, at the Binghamton Regency Hotel.

?Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of ADHD: Unlocking the Potential of Patients with ADHD? will provide information on medication, nutritional, psychological and educational interventions of the disorder, which is a neuro-psychiatric disorder that affects at least 3 to 5 percent of Americans.

Presenters will be Vincent J. Monastra, Helen Battisti, Lisa Hughes, Janice Lee and Wilma Jozwiak. The featured speaker will be Dr. Timothy E. Wilens. Participants will receive certificates of completion and 0.7 CEUs.

Registration is $85 per person until October 24, $95 after October 25. The cost for groups of at least five will be $75 per person and $85 after October 25.

UUP benefits explained to part-time employees
A series of workshops will be offered next week to present information on the benefits provided to part-time United University Professions employees and also to address any concerns.

Workshops will be presented by Beth Kilmarx, part-time concerns representative, and UUP representative Jim Dix, vice president for academics and Fran Goldman, vice president for professionals. Refreshments will be provided. Sessions for part-time academics will be held from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, in PSPC-E and from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, in PSPC-C. They will be moderated by Dix. Part-time professionals will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, PCPC-C. Goldman will moderate the session.
