Men’s soccer posts nation’s highest Division I team GPA
The Binghamton men’s soccer team, which has advanced to the past six America East Conference championship games, posted the highest team GPA among more than 200 NCAA Division I programs during the 2007-08 academic year. The results were posted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Bearcats attained a cumulative GPA of 3.37 in 2007-08, their highest ever as a Division I program. Among Division I schools, the Bearcats finished ahead of second-place Dartmouth (3.34), which was the top Division I school last season.
“Binghamton University is very proud of the efforts of Coach Paul Marco and our men’s soccer team,” Director of Athletics Joel Thirer said. “In addition to being one of our consistently most competitive athletic programs, our men’s soccer team has combined that athletic success with their commitment in the classroom. They set a high standard for all of our teams, as well as for the young people in our community, as to what being a student-athlete means.”
“This honor is a testament to all of the hard work our players have put into our program,” Marco said. “They have set a standard of excellence and been successful in every way.”
The 2007-08 academic year marks the third consecutive time that the Bearcats have ranked among the top four Division I programs in the nation in terms of overall GPA. During 2006-07, Binghamton was fourth with a 3.26 GPA and the preceding year, it was third with a 3.30 team GPA.
This past season, Binghamton finished 12-6-3 and set the America East record by advancing to its sixth straight title game.
Toy donations bring chance to win free parking
Anyone who donates a toy to the Toys for Tots campaign has the opportunity to enter a drawing for five days of free parking.
The Toys for Tots campaign will once again be sponsored by Parking Services.
Drop-off barrels will be placed at the Visitors Paid Lot, parking garage, information booth, Parking Services office, Admissions office, Campus Preschool, ICD, and the lobby of the University Downtown Center. Anyone bringing in a new or gently used toy while the barrel locations are staffed can register for the drawing.
On Monday, Dec. 22, four names will be drawn. Each of the winners will receive five days of free parking in the paid lot or the parking garage.

Save Dec. 24 pay stub for tax purposes
Pay stubs and direct deposit advices issued on Dec. 24 include important year-end tax information for all faculty and staff. It is the only document that will include totals for some deductions that may be necessary for you to report to the IRS during tax return preparation.
Retention of this document will provide year-to-date health insurance premium, long-term care insurance and union dues/fee-payer totals for 2008. These figures may be required when completing some 2008 income tax forms. These figures are not provided on the 2008 W-2 form, which will be mailed directly to everyone from the New York State Comptroller’s office in Albany by the end of January.

Option transfer period for health plans is extended
The option transfer period has been extended through Jan. 5. All requests for changes in health insurance plans must be postmarked on or before Jan. 5.
The effective date of these changes will be Dec. 25, 2008. The rate table can be found at: http://humanresources.binghamton.edu/HRNews.html.
Tax-deferred annuity limits unveiled for 2009
New tax-deferred annuity limits for 2009 have been announced: The general limit for 2009 is $16,500.
For anyone age 50 or older anytime in 2009, you can contribute an additional $5,500, for a maximum of $22,000. If you have 15 or more years of service with SUNY, you may be able to contribute an additional $3,000. State employees are able to maximize contributions to both their tax-deferred savings plans and the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan concurrently.

The Binghamton University School of Management was featured in AccountingWeb on June 12 regarding a partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers. PricewaterhouseCoopers agreed to financially support renovations to Webster Street Park in Binghamton for the benefit of students and local residents. More than 100 BU students, representatives from PricewaterhouseCoopers and Parks Department employees gathered to improve and reopen the park. Mayor Matthew T. Ryan declared May 2 as PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars Day in the City of Binghamton.
Kathryn Sklar, distinguished professor of history, was featured in The MinnPost (Minn.) on June 16 regarding the Democratic Party presidential nomination. A seven-member panel of history professors was invited to interpret the campaign’s historical importance at the University of Minnesota, titled “Clinton and Obama: Historians Reflect on Historic Candidacies.” Sklar summed up the Democratic race as a “double-first,” in terms of a woman and an African-American. Said Sklar of Clinton: “She opened the door for other women. She made it easier for other women to run. We owe her a lot.”
Bill McCarthy, associate director of the Career Development Center, was featured in MSN Careers and CNN.com on June 25 regarding things to ponder before taking your first job. “If location, location, location is the slogan for real estate, then networking, networking, networking is the mantra for career development and landing full-time jobs,” McCarthy said.
Brian Hazlett, director of undergraduate recruitment, was featured in College Admission Professionals Network regarding the creation of a social network for college admission professionals. Hazlett created the College Admission Professionals Network when he realized no such network existed and less than a month later, almost 400 members from around the world have joined. The network allows admissions professionals to connect with each other, as well as share news and information.
Andrew Morris, associate director of undergraduate admissions, was quoted in The Greentree Gazette (Fla.) regarding college admissions. “Alumni volunteers are our regional sales staffs. They know who our customers might be in other parts of the country. They know where the marketing programs or opportunities may be. They even speak the local language,” Morris said. Alumni volunteers can usually spot a student who will benefit from four years at a college or university.
Cheryl Brown, director of undergraduate admissions, was featured on NBC 4 (D.C.) on June 22 regarding a growing demand for AP high school classes. According to Brown, “Some schools don’t offer the same number of courses or the same courses with rigor that others do so the secret for us is to learn about the district.” She also explained, “Life is made by what you make of the college experience.”
Kevin Sheridan, project director of the Public Archaeology Facility, was featured in The Palladium Times (Oswego) on June 25 regarding a new archaeological analysis. According to Sheridan, the study on the western part of county Route 45, adjacent to its intersection with Route 481, “is just a preliminary survey.” The Public Archaeology Facility team is deployed in circumstances concerning development to assess the construction site, assuring there is no historical material present in the surrounding land.
Eugene Stevens, professor of chemistry, was quoted in the online journal RedOrbit on July 7 for his explanation of biodegradable plastic standards. As a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, Stevens has conducted research on biopolymers for more than 30 years. “It’s a little complicated, but in general, if it biodegrades to 90 percent within six months in an industrial composting environment with no toxic components, that’s compostable,” Stevens said.
