SEFA Campaign more than halfway to its 2008 goal
The campus is more than halfway to its $65,000 goal for the 2008 State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) Campaign.
Pledges and donations from 191 employees totaled $34,378 (52.8 percent) as of Friday, Oct. 24. Last year at this time, $33,226 had been donated to the campaign that benefits a variety of health, human services and environmental advocacy agencies. This year’s theme is “Your Donation Makes a World of Difference.”

ICD to celebrate new social learning center
Binghamton University’s Institute of Child Development (ICD) will hold a grand opening celebration of its new social learning center at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the ICD parking area.
The social learning center is designed to provide children associated with the ICD, their siblings and others who participate in treatment plans, with a year-round safe place to play outdoors. Designed with safety as a top priority, features include top-quality, all-weather safety surfacing, attractive fencing and a variety of playground equipment approved by the National Program for Playground Safety.
The event will include a ribbon-cutting, family picnic and tours of the new center and the ICD facilities.

Program to examine ‘Children and Eating Disorders
Binghamton University’s Eating Awareness Committee will present “A Mother’s Perspective: Children and Eating Disorders,” by Mary Ellen Clausen, at
7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Susquehanna Room of the University Union. The program is free and open to the public.
Clausen, founder and executive director of Ophelia’s Place, will provide a real-life perspective as the mother of two daughters with eating disorders. Ophelia’s Place offers assistance to those suffering from an eating disorder, as well as helps families understand and gain compassion for those who struggle with a disorder.
The program is sponsored by the Eating Awareness Committee and Sodexo Campus Services at Binghamton University. The Eating Awareness Committee’s mission is to help students maintain balanced eating habits to foster a healthy lifestyle.

Libraries to host visit from research representative
The University Libraries will host presentations by Virginia Kerr, digital program manager at the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago, on Monday, Nov. 3, in the second floor staff lounge of the Bartle Library.
Kerr will discuss the cooperative collection development programs and services offered by CRL and how University faculty and students can use these to their fullest advantage in their research. The sessions will be given twice on Nov. 3. The first will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and the second from 5-6 p.m.
The CRL Global Resources collections include the largest collection of circulating newspapers in North American, including 2,000 U.S. ethnic titles, more than 38,000 rarely held foreign journals, more than 800,000 foreign dissertations and major microform and paper collections in area studies ranging from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and more.

Children’s concert scheduled for Nov. 1
Hear how scary music is made as the Binghamton University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Timothy Perry, presents the 2008 Children’s Concert Spooky Sounds at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the AC-Osterhout Concert Theater.
The orchestra will begin the concert with an Introduction to the Orchestra, in which children will hear each instrument individually, then in a short piece arranged especially for the instrumental family and finally re-combined as the full symphonic ensemble for a performance of Anatol Liadov’s Baba-Yaga. The orchestra will then present Wolf’s-glen Scene (Act II finale) from Carl Maria von Weber’s romantic opera Der Freischütz, and Camille Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre.
